Men’s Soccer: Macalester Moves Up to No. 5 in Region IX Rankings

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team moved up one spot to No. 5 in this week's Region IX coaches poll conducted by the United Soccer Coaches, the organization announced today. The Scots earned a pair of MIAC victories last week to climb into third place in the conference standings.

Last Wednesday, Macalester gave up the first goal but rallied for a 6-2 victory at Concordia. First year midfielders Kuba Ferguson (Houston, Texas/Mirabeau B. Lamar), Gaven Johnson (Harrison, Ohio/William Harrison) and Milan Shah (Chicago, Ill./Francis W. Parker), senior midfielder Ondieki Maina (Kensington, Calif./El Cerrito), junior forward Zach Liptzin (Denver, Colo./Northfield) and first year forward Joe Melloh (Edina, Minn./The Blake School) scored for the Scots. Then on Saturday, Macalester went to Gustavus and came away with a 3-0 victory over last week's fourth-ranked team in the region. Liptzin scored in the second and 84th minutes, while Johnson found the net in the 90th minute. Maina added two assists in the victory, which was the Scots' first over Gustavus since 2017.

The top three spots remained the same from last week, with fourth-ranked St. Olaf, No. 7 Augsburg, and No. 13 Lake Forest holding at first through third. UW-Eau Claire moved up to fourth, followed by Macalester and Gustavus, which dropped two spots to sixth. complete the top six. Luther and Saint John's enter this week's regional ranking at No. 7 and No. 8.

The Scots host St. Scholastica in another MIAC match tonight. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium.
