ST. PETER, Minn. – Junior forward
Zach Liptzin (Denver, Colo./Northfield) scored a pair of goals 82 minutes apart to lift the Macalester College men's soccer team to a big MIAC victory on the road at Gustavus, 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Gustie Soccer Field. The win leapfrogs the Scots over the Gusties into third place in the conference standings, giving Macalester a 10-4 record overall and a 5-2 mark in the MIAC. Gustavus drops to 10-4-1, 4-3-1 MIAC.
Liptzin's first goal came just 87 seconds into the game. Junior forward
Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) forced a turnover deep in Gustavus territory, then found Liptzin with a pass from the left side to the back post that Liptzin banged into the net from six yards out.
The score remained 1-0 until the 84th minute, when senior midfielder
Ondieki Maina (Kensington, Calif./El Cerrito) dropped a pass back to Liptzin, who buried a shot into the left side of the goal from 12 yards out for his second tally of the game. The performance gives Liptzin a team-leading five goals this season, including four goals in his past three games. Nineteen seconds before the final whistle, Maina broke free on a counter attack and slid a pass to first year midfielder
Gaven Johnson (Harrison, Ohio/William Harrison), who scored from 15 yards out to make the final score 3-0. Johnson now has four goals and three assists to tie Liptzin for the team lead with 11 points.
The Scots were outshot, 16-7, with junior goalkeeper
Drew Moseman (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central) credited with one save. It was Moseman's third shutout of the season.
Macalester hosts St. Scholastica on Tuesday, Oct. 21 in a MIAC game. The match starts at 7:30 p.m. at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium.
