Men’s Soccer: Scots Win Goal Fest at Concordia, 6-2

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team tallied a season-high six goals in a 6-2 MIAC victory at Concordia College Wednesday afternoon at Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex. The win gives the Scots a 9-4 overall record and a 4-2 mark in conference play. The Cobbers fall to 0-9-4 overall and 0-5-1 in the MIAC.

The last 20 minutes of the first half saw five goals scored, with Concordia striking first with a tally by Gannon Brooks in the 26th minute. Just 57 seconds later, first year midfielder Kuba Ferguson (Houston, Texas/Mirabeau B. Lamar) gathered a clearance by a defender, dribbled to the top right corner of the penalty area and unleashed a shot into the top left corner of the goal to tie the score at 1-1.

Then in the 33rd minute, Ferguson set up first year midfielder Gaven Johnson (Harrison, Ohio/William Harrison) with a drop pass that Johnson hammered into the left side of the goal from 17 yards out to put the Scots up 2-1. The lead was short-lived, as Ricco Rolle tied the game up with a goal in the 37th minute. The deadlock also didn't last, as passes by sophomore midfielder Jonathan Kim (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) and senior forward Parker Etzbach (Wilton, Conn./Wooster School) allowed first year midfielder Milan Shah (Chicago, Ill./Francis W. Parker) to blast a shot into the upper part of the goal from 23 yards out to give the lead back to Macalester, 3-2.

In the second half, senior midfielder Ondieki Maina (Kensington, Calif./El Cerrito) slipped a shot into the near side of the goal from 10 yards away on the right side off an assist from Johnson in the 48th minute. Seven minutes later, passes from senior defender Daniel Romanenko (Los Angeles, Calif./Geffen Academy of UCLA) and junior midfielder Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellermine) sprung junior forward Zach Liptzin (Denver, Colo./Northfield) down the right side. Liptzen scored from a sharp angle for a 5-2 edge. First year forward Joe Melloh (Edina, Minn./The Blake School) completed the scoring in the 73rd minute, when he finished a give-and-go with Kim with a shot into the right side of the goal from 15 yards out.

The Scots took 22 shots and put 13 on frame, with the Cobbers putting four of their six shots on goal. First year goalkeeper Justin Ratner (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) made two saves for Macalester.

The Scots face Gustavus in a key MIAC game on Saturday, Oct. 18. The match starts at 1:00 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
