ST. PAUL, Minn. – For the third week in a row, the Macalester College men's soccer team was ranked sixth in this week's Region IX coaches poll conducted by the United Soccer Coaches, the organization announced Tuesday. The Scots won their only game last week, a 2-1 victory over Saint John's on Saturday.
Macalester started and finished well against the Johnnies, opening the scoring in the third minute and netting the game winner in the 64th minute. Senior midfielder
Ondieki Maina (Kensington, Calif./El Cerrito) set up junior forward
Zach Liptzin (Denver, Colo./Northfield) with a pass that resulted in a breakaway goal less than three minutes after kickoff. After surrendering a goal in the 20th minute, the Scots regained the lead when junior midfielder
Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine) found junior forward
Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) with a pass in behind the defense. Frantz notched his team-leading fourth goal of the season to put Macalester on top to stay. Junior goalkeeper
Drew Moseman (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central) made seven saves in goal.
The top six spots remained the same from last week, with fifth-ranked St. Olaf sitting atop the region poll. No. 8 Augsburg, No. 13 Lake Forest, Gustavus, UW-Eau Claire and Macalester complete the top six. UW-Superior moved up one spot to seventh, and Loras enters the regional rankings this week at No. 8.
The Scots travel to Moorhead, Minn., today to take on Concordia College in a MIAC contest. The match starts at 4:00 p.m.
