Men’s Soccer: Macalester Scores Early, Late to Beat Saint John’s, 2-1

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team picked up an important MIAC victory with a 2-1 win over Saint John's University Saturday afternoon at John Leaney Field at Macalester Stadium. The Scots improve to 8-4 on the season, including a 3-2 mark in the conference. The Johnnies drop to 7-5-1 overall and 2-4 in the MIAC.

Just under three minutes after the start of the game, senior midfielder Ondieki Maina (Kensington, Calif./El Cerrito) sent a long pass up the middle to junior forward Zach Liptzin (Denver, Colo./Northfield) in behind the defense. Liptzin beat Saint John's goalkeeper Cole Hanson for a 1-0 lead. In the 20th minute, the Johnnies pulled even with a goal by Lisle Cherwien off an assist from Connor Drong to tie the score at 1-1.

Macalester regained momentum into the second half, culminating in a goal by junior forward Chris Frantz (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) in the 64th minute. Junior midfielder Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellermine) dribbled from the right side near the top of the penalty area and slipped a pass through to Frantz, who scored from 10 yards out for a 2-1 lead. Saint John's best chance to equalize came in the 90th minute, when a header by Ronan O'Connor off a corner kick glanced off the crossbar and out of bounds.

Junior goalkeeper Drew Moseman (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central) recorded seven saves in goal for Macalester, while Hanson had three saves. The Scots held a narrow 11-10 edge in shots taken.

Macalester hits the road to take on Concordia College on Wednesday, Oct. 15. The MIAC match begins at 4:00 p.m. in Moorhead, Minn.
