MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Sophomore
Skye Schmit (Stillwater, Minn.) won her third individual title and was named the Co-Swimmer of the Year, as the Macalester College women's swimming & diving team wrapped up competition at the MIAC Swimming & Diving Championships Saturday night at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Head coach
Kyllian Griffin repeated as MIAC Coach of the Year, as the Scots finished third in the team standings with 576 points.
Gustavus won the MIAC meet with 649.5 points, followed by St. Catherine with 608. Carleton placed fourth with 503.5 points.
Schmit, who won the 500-yard freestyle on Thursday and the 200-yard freestyle on Friday, defended her title in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:31.39, over 24 seconds faster than the runner-up. She shared Swimmer of the Year honors with Emma Svendsen of St. Catherine.
Sophomore
Izzy Uhlhorn-Thornton (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) followed up her title in the 100-yard breaststroke yesterday by winning the 200-yard breaststroke with a school-record time of 2:21.63. She broke her own record of 2:21.95 set last year. Junior
Eleanor Petrin (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka) made the B final in the 200 breaststroke and placed 13th in 2:34.27.
Three Scots earned All-MIAC recognition with second-place finishes in their events. Sophomore
Emma Henry (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith) finished second in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:06.33. Senior
Jocelyn Radke (Indianapolis, Ind.) placed second in the 100-yard freestyle in 53.20. Sophomore
Hannah Zurn (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) broke the school record in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:10.97 to finish second. The old record of 2:12.61 was set by
Sam Aamot in 2014.
Besides Henry, three other Scots scored in the 200-yard backstroke. Junior
Verity Wray-Raabolle (Owatonna, Minn./Bethlehem Academy) finished seventh in 2:08.79, sophomore
Nadia Lanz (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) was 11th in 2:11.71, and first year
Saffron Hinz (Vashon Island, Wash./Vashon Island) took 16th in 2:16.40.
In the 100-yard freestyle, junior
Olga Merkadeau (Lafayette, Calif./The College Preparatory School) placed 15th with a time of 55.54. In the 200-yard butterfly, junior
Olivia Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Shorewood) was seventh in 2:15.65 and junior
Natalie Pollock (Madison, Wis./Madison West) took ninth in 2:16.50.
Macalester closed out the meet with the foursome of Radke, Pollock, Henry and Schmit taking third in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a school-record time of 3:33.99. The old record was set by junior
Caroline Chapon (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township),
Anna Rakowski, Merkadeau and Radke in 2022.
