ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's swimming & diving team hosted Carleton College on Saturday afternoon at Riley Pool. The Knights won the overall team competition over the Scots by a score of 156-144, as strong individual performances by Macalester were unable to overcome relay losses.
Macalester's 200-yard medley relay team started the meet with a second-place finish by the foursome of senior
Verity Wray-Raabolle (Owatonna, Minn./Bethlehem Academy), first year
Carolyn Wolking (Micanopy, Fla./Santa Fe College), senior
Olga Merkadeau (Lafayette, Calif./The College Preparatory School) and senior
Caroline Chapon (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) at a time of 1:52.51.
Individually, first year
Molly Nuckolls (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) won a pair of events, taking first in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:58.61) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:14.17). Junior
Emma Henry (Madison, Wis./Madison West) also won two events, the 200-yard backstroke (2:13.53) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.72). First year
Amalia Shields (Madison, Wis./Madison West) placed first in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:02.11 and Chapon won the 200-yard Individual Medley in 2:16.88.
Senior
Kate Yehle (Madison, Wis./James Madison Memorial) finished third in both the 3-meter and 1-meter events, with scores of 184.25 and 180.35, respectively. Senior
Lauren Schutz (Madison, Wis./James Madison Memorial) also finished in top-five places in both diving events.
Going into the final event, the 200-yard freestyle relay, the Scots had kept the score close enough that an event win could secure an overall meet victory. The relay team of Henry,
Natalie Pollock (Madison, Wis./Madison West), Merkadeau, and Chapon (1:40.51) were just 0.12 seconds behind the victorious Carleton team. That photo-finish made Riley Pool erupt with noise from both sets of fans and athletes.
Macalester returns to the pool on Tuesday, Nov. 12, hosting the Hour of Power event with Carleton College.
