Women’s Soccer: Macalester Places Six on Academic All-District Team

| By:
ST. PAUL, Minn. –  Six members of the Macalester College women's soccer team were included on the NCAA Division III Academic All-District Team, the College Sports Communicators (CSC) announced today. Juniors Maia Lemov (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) and Becky Mulcahy (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) are repeat selections, while junior Hazel Waters (Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley) and sophomores Abbey Birkey (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids), Avery Ellis (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) and Timna Nevo (Portland, Ore./Sunset) are making their first appearances on the Academic All-District Team.

Student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically; have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.50; and have played in 90 percent of their team's games or have started at least 66 percent of their team's games to be considered for Academic All-District and Academic All-American accolades.

Lemov started all 17 games this season, eventually moving to the backline from the midfield. Her presence as a central defender helped to solidify the Scots' defense late in the season. A neuroscience and economics double-major, Lemov also made the Academic All-MIAC team last year.

Mulcahy overcame injuries to start 12 of her 14 games played this fall as an outside defender. She was a key part of the Scots' set plays and delivered an assist on a free kick against Bethel in a 1-1 tie on Oct. 1. An All-MIAC selection as a sophomore, the political science major made the Academic All-MIAC team in 2023.

Waters led Macalester in minutes played with 1444 while starting all 17 games as a central defender. This fall she developed into a key part of the Scots' defensive corps after recording 16 starts in her first two years combined. Waters, who also made the Academic All-MIAC team last fall, is majoring in chemistry.

Birkey emerged as a contributor on the outside, starting 12 of her 16 games played. She tallied an assist in the season-opening win over the University of Northwestern on Aug. 30 and scored her first collegiate goal in a 2-1 victory over UW-Superior on Oct. 9. She is a biology major at Macalester.

Ellis played in all 17 games with seven starts at forward. She scored goals in a 5-0 win over Crown on Sept. 4 and in the victory over UW-Superior. Ellis also registered an assist in the win at St. Scholastica on Oct. 12. She is majoring in psychology.

Nevo was second on the team to Waters with 1,284 minutes played as an outside defender. Like Waters, she also started every game, bringing consistency and a high work rate to the Scots' backline. Nevo is majoring in both environmental studies and biology.
