ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Macalester College women's track and field team finished the first day at the MIAC Outdoor Championships on Friday at Hamline University. Junior
Hannah Grosse (Minneapolis, Minn./Coon Rapids) provided the highlight of Day 1 for the Scots by breaking the school record in the pole vault.
Grosse, who set the previous record of 3.37 meters (11-0.75) last week at the Ole Open, finished fourth with a vault of 3.43 (11-3). Grosse tied with two other vaulters for second place but had more misses. The performance also tops her best effort indoors of 3.40 (11-1.75), which is also the indoor school record.
Also in the field events, sophomore
Journey Amundson (Iron River, Wis./Northwestern) took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 5.12 (16-9.75). First year
Sarah Beth Hobby (South Pittsburg, Tenn./St. Andrew's-Sewanee School) narrowly missed scoring in the javelin, taking ninth with a toss of 29.20 (95-10).
On the track, Amundson qualified for the finals in the 200 meters by posting the sixth-fastest time of 26.86 in the prelims. First year
Maria Blaesing (Munster, Ind./Munster) took fourth in her heat and seventh overall with a time of 4:53.19 in the 1500 meters to qualify for Saturday's finals. Junior
Lena Stern (Seattle, Wash./Garfield) just missed qualifying in the 1500 by one spot, taking 13th overall in 5:06.27.
Macalester will conclude the 2021 season with the final day of the MIAC Championships on Saturday, May 15 at Hamline. The field events begin at 12:00 p.m., while the running events start at 1:00 p.m.
