ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Macalester men's soccer team improved to 5-3-3 on the season and 3-1 in MIAC play with an overtime victory over Bethel on Tuesday night at Macalester Stadium. Senior
Webster An (Ann Arbor, Mich./Rudolf Steiner School) scored the game-winner less than a minute into overtime to secure the win for the Scots.
With the win, Macalester stays perfect against Bethel on their home turf at 10-0 and moves to 17-1 in their all-time series history, including winning the past nine in a row.
The opponents were evenly matched in the first half, as both teams took six shots with three of them being on net. One of the Scots' best scoring opportunities in the half came when sophomore
Danny Peak (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) broke open on the right side of the field, but Bethel's goalie, Colin Hupert, came out of the box to break up the threat.
In the 33
rd minute the Scots had another good chance, this time off a corner kick when
Theo Nsereko (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) got an open look, but his shot missed just high. About eight minutes later,
Alex Foster (Chicago, Ill./University of Chicago Laboratory Schools) tested Hupert, making him dive to save a shot headed for the bottom left of the net. Hupert's save kept the game tied at 0-0 heading into the halftime break.
In the second half, Macalester held a 5-3 edge in shots, but only took two shots on goal in the 45-minute period despite threatening in the Royals' defensive end on many occasions. One of their best chances was in the 55
th minute when
Chris Bajek (Fitchburg, Wis./Madison West) lofted a shot from just outside the box, but it went barely over the net keeping the game tied.
It did not take the Scots long to score in the overtime frame, with
Nick Moore (Georgetown, Mass./Governor's Academy) passing it to
Floyd Krom (Naaldwijk, Netherlands/UWC-Costa Rica) who found Webster breaking down the right sideline. An took Krom's pass and fired a shot on net that found the back left of the goal to give Macalester the win.
This was An's second goal of the season to put him at five points for the year, which ranks third-highest on the team. Moore tallied his third assist and Krom his second on the play.
Goalkeeper
Cade Fink (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) had four saves in the contest and now has 47 saves on the season. His record improves to 4-3-3 with the win.
