Men's Soccer: Scots Fall to Gusties In Overtime

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester College men's soccer team lost in overtime to Gustavus Adolphus today, 1-0. The Scots will now look forward to playing in the MIAC Playoffs in the coming week.

In an open and physical opening half, the Scots and Gusties were each able to produce successful offense but the score held at 0-0. Sophomore Floyd Krom (Naaldwijk, Netherlands/UWC-Costa Rica) who scored one goal and had two assists last week, had the Scots first chance to take the lead.

With 17 minutes played in the half, senior Logan Harper (Westwood, Mass./St. Mark's School) sent a long ball into the box which Krom headered down to the left Gusties corner. The Gustavus keeper was able to get a hand on it and saw it bounce against the post and out of bounds.

Macalester finished the half with seven shots to the Gusties eight and with neither team scoring the half ended 0-0.

In the second half, the game continued to be wide open. The Scots had a close chance when in the 23rd minute junior Chris Bajek (Fitchburg, Wis./Madison West) took a hard shot from outside the eighteen box, had the Gusties keeper beat but was denied by the crossbar.

Neither Macalester or Gustavus were able to score the rest of the second half and the game moved to overtime.

Then with a minute and a half left in the game the Scots gave up a foul just outside their own box. The free kick was saved by senior keeper Colton Wenig  (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) but the ball was rebounded into the net by the Gusties, ending the game in a 1-0 loss for the Scots.

Macalester finishes the regular season in third in the MIAC and will now play in the first round of the MIAC playoffs this week.

The Scots will play at home this Tuesday, Oct. 30 against Hamline University at 2:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
