ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Macalester College men's soccer team beat Hamline University in the MIAC quarterfinals today. The Scots on 3-1 at home and now will travel to Carleton College for a semifinal matchup.
Macalester's opening goal came 13 minutes into the game. Junior
Nick Moore (Georgetown, Mass./Governor's Academy) passed an untouched ball from the right flank to wide open first year
Omar Anwar (St. Paul, Minn./Roseville Area) in the box. Anwar scored his first game of the season as he first timed Moore's assist low into the Piper's net.
The Scots went into half up 1-0 despite forcing the Hamline keeper to make two more saves in the half and seeing one shot denied by the woodwork.
With less than a minute played in the second half, the Scots doubled their lead as sophomore
Floyd Krom (Naaldwijk, Netherlands/UWC-Costa Rica) was awarded a penalty kick after being dragged down in the Hamline box. Senior
Jamel Benahmida (Faribault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's) stepped up to take the penalty kick, confidently striking it into the back of the Hamline goal.
Macalester continued to press the Pipers' back line, tallying 9 shots and a corner kick by senior
Logan Harper (Westwood, Mass./St. Mark's School) which hit the Pipers' back post.
Finally, in the 59th minute, junior
Webster An (Ann Arbor, Mich./Rudolf Steiner School) capitalized on the Scots offensive pressure and scored his first goal of the season. A long pass from first year center back
Will Orser (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial) split the Hamline defense, sending An through to score the final goal of the match for the Scots.
The Scots gave up a free kick just outside their own eighteen in the 80th minute, and saw the Pipers take a goal back. But Hamline was unable to mount a comeback and the Scots won 3-1.
Macalester will now travel to Carleton College to face the Knights in the MIAC semifinals. The Scots tied Carleton on the road this season 1-1.
The semifinal will be played on Wednesday, Oct.31 at 2:00 p.m. in Northfield, Minn.
