ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College football team broke multiple offensive records in a 47-21 victory over Lawrence University Saturday afternoon at Macalester Stadium. The Midwest Conference North Division win gives the Scots (5-1) a 2-0 record in conference play. The Vikings fall to 1-5, 0-2 MWC.
Senior receiver
Alec Beatty (Topeka, Kan./Topeka) caught 10 passes for a school-record 218 yards and three touchdowns, while first year quarterback
Grady Munro (Calgary, Alberta/Springbank Community) set the new program standard with 391 yards passing. As a team, the Scots threw for 426 yards to eclipse the old school record of 397. Additionally, Beatty now has 11 touchdown receptions on the season, surpassing his own record of 10 set last year.
Macalester set the tone on the first offensive play of the game, as Munro threw a short pass to junior running back
Krishn Rapoor (Omaha, Neb./Brownell-Talbot) that Rapoor took 78 yards to the end zone for a 7-0 lead. On the Scots' next possession, Munro hit Beatty on 4th-and-7 with a 21-yard touchdown pass to put Macalester on top, 14-0. Lawrence got on the scoreboard when a bad snap eluded Munro and was recovered by the Vikings in the end zone near the end of the first quarter.
The Scots' aerial attack continued in the second quarter, as Munro connected with junior receiver
Reese Bresson (Homosassa, Fla./Crystal River) on a 30-yard touchdown pass for a 21-7 lead. After Lawrence scored on an 80-yard pass from D'Andre Weaver to Jacob Sullivan, Beatty made a great catch on a 10-yard pass from Munro to put the Scots ahead, 28-14 at the half.
On the first drive of the second half, a 65-yard run by Ethan Simmons on 3rd-and-17 led to a Lawrence touchdown that brought the Vikings to within seven, 28-21. Senior running back
Jeremy Stephan (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) answered for Macalester with a 1-yard touchdown run that followed another acrobatic catch by Beatty. Stephan found the end zone again from one yard out on the next possession to give the Scots a 40-21 advantage late in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, senior receiver
Jonathan Knee (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Beatty on fourth down to wrap up the scoring.
Munro, who was making his first collegiate start, completed 25-of-32 for 391 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. Rapoor finished with three catches for 91 yards and a touchdown, while Knee caught seven passes for 55 yards. Stephan rushed for 54 yards. Defensively, junior linebacker
Josh Bartz (Omaha, Neb./Brownell-Talbot) had five tackles and an interception. Sophomore linebacker
Sam Jakshtis (Hardwick, Mass./Worcester Academy) also had five tackles, while junior defensive back
Mason Cohn (Charlotte, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) had an interception.
The Scots continue Midwest Conference action with a game at Ripon College on Saturday, Oct. 20. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. in Ripon, Wis.
