Box Score MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Macalester College men's basketball team fell to MIAC foe Concordia College, 100-81 Saturday afternoon at Memorial Auditorium. The Scots are now 2-16 overall and 1-12 in conference play, while the Cobbers improve to 5-13, 3-10 MIAC.
Macalester built a 19-14 lead over the first seven minutes of the first half, with senior guard
Brett Olson (New London, Minn./New London-Spicer) scoring five points and first years
Jackson Henningfield (Lake Mary, Fla./Lyman) and
Keegan Greaney (Sisters, Ore./Sisters) adding four points apiece. Concordia gained the upper hand with a 12-2 run to take a 26-21 edge midway through the half. The Cobbers pushed their lead to as many as 13 points before the Scots closed out the period with an 11-4 run to trail, 50-44 at the half. Henningfield had six points in the run and 10 for the half to match Olson.
Macalester opened the second half hitting from long range, as threes from Olson, Henningfield and sophomore guard
Nikhil Smith (Augusta, Ga./Lakeside) tied the score at 53-53 with 18:01 on the clock. With the game knotted at 55-55, Concordia reeled off eight consecutive points, including six from Bryden Urie, to lead, 63-55 with 13:12 remaining. The Scots came within four points twice, and a layup by first year guard
Gabriel Ramos (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Tasis Dorado) made the score 71-66 Cobbers with 8:46 to play.
From that point the hosts began to pull away, using a 14-4 run to lead 85-70 at the five-minute mark. The Scots were unable to get closer than 13 points the rest of the way, as Concordia defeated Macalester for the second time this season.
Olson led the Scots with a career-high 20 points while making 4-of-6 from three-point range. Henningfield finished with 19 points, five rebounds and two blocks, as five Macalester players scored in double-figures. Ramos had 12 points, Smith ended up with 11 points, and first year guard
Aidan Toner-Rodgers (Sebastopol, Calif./Analy) contributed 10 points, three rebounds and three assists. Greaney recorded three of the Scots' 14 steals on the day. Urie paced the Cobbers with 21 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.
Macalester continues MIAC play on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at St. Thomas. The game starts at 7:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
