ST. PAUL, Minn. – Macalester College lost to the University of Wisconsin-Superior and the University of Wisconsin- River Falls,3-0 and 3-1, in the opening night of the Macalester Volleyball Invitational. The Scots are now 2-5 on the season but will look forward to another two matches tomorrow to finish out the tournament.
Macalester closely lost in straight sets, 25-21, 25-18, 25-20, against UW-Superior. Senior outside hitters
Clara Baumann (Wausau, Wis./Wausau East) and
India Medaris (Napa, Calif/Justin Siena) led the Scots in kills with 13 and 11 respectively. The Scots offenses was aided by junior setter
Sofi Ascencio (Oakland, Calif/Holy Names) with 28 digs and helped on offense tallying 11 digs. First year
Abrielle Dillon (Brown Deer, Wis./University School of Milwaukee) continued to lead Macalester in defense with 15 digs.
In the late match, Macalester closely fought with UW-River Falls, winning the first set 26-24.
Baumann, 19 kills and 21 digs, and
Medaris, 16 kills, continued to lead the Scots offense.
Ascencio added 32 more assists to her night and tallied 21 more digs in the second match. After the first set win, Macalester could not close out UW-River Falls and lost the next three sets 25-20, 25-19,25-18 to the Flacons.
Next up for Macalester is a non-conference match against the Knox College on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 10:00 a.m. and Linfield College 12 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
