NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team split a MIAC doubleheader with St. Olaf College, winning the first game, 12-0 and falling in Game 2, 10-3 Monday afternoon at Mark Almli Field. The games mark the end of conference play for the Scots (16-17), who end the season with a league record of 6-14. The Oles are now 10-23 overall and 4-14 MIAC.
Sophomore
Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) powered Macalester in the first game, going 4-for-4 with two homers, three runs and six runs batted in. He drove in the Scots' first runs of the game with a two-run single in the top of the first, then followed a RBI single by sophomore
Nick McMullen (Payson, Ariz./Payson) with a two-run home run for a 5-0 lead. In the fifth inning, first year delivered a two-run single and senior
Jonathan Melms (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) came through with a two-run double to put Macalester ahead, 9-0.
Brantner left the yard for the second time in the game and third time this season in the top of the sixth. Sophomore
Ben Castagnetti (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) closed out the scoring with a bases-loaded single that plated senior
Nick Sia (Crofton, Md./South River) for a 12-0 lead. Castagnetti, McMullen, Melms and senior
Sam Berk (Miami, Fla./Palmer Trinity School) each had two hits.
As good as the bats were in Game 1, the top performance of the game came from first year pitcher
Cole Chang (Pleasantville, N.Y./Collegiate School), who tossed a three-hit shutout. Chang struck out six batters while walking one in seven innings to improve to 4-1 on the season.
Junior
Quentin Stuart (Mashville, Ind./Indiana Academy) helped the Scots start well in Game 2, blasting a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. The homer was his team-leading sixth of the season. This time, St. Olaf answered with five runs in the bottom of the third to take its first lead of the game, 5-2. In the top of the fifth, first year
Jared Abelson (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) singled home Brantner to make it a two-run deficit, 5-3. But the Oles tallied three runs in the fifth and single runs in the seventh and eighth to pull away, 10-3. Abelson had two of Macalester's 10 hits in the loss.
The Scots wrap up the 2016 season with a non-conference doubleheader at UW-Stout on Monday, May 9, beginning at 2:30 p.m. in Menomonie, Wis.
