MENOMENIE, Wis. – The Macalester College baseball team wrapped up the 2016 season with a split at UW-Stout in a non-conference doubleheader Monday afternoon at Nelson Field. The Scots end the year with a 17-18 record, while the Blue Devils are now 15-25.
In Game 1, UW-Stout took a 1-0 with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Macalester responded in the top of the second, as first year
Graham Low (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) tripled to plate first year
Jared Abelson (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) and tie the score at 1-1. Then in the fourth, Low singled home senior
Sam Berk (Miami, Fla./Palmer Trinity School) from second base for a 2-1 lead. The Scots added an insurance run in the seventh, when sophomore
Ben Castagnetti (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) delivered a two-out single that brought home Low to make the score 3-1. Low finished the game 3-for-3 with a triple and two runs batted in, while Castagnetti and Abelson each had two hits.
First year right-hander
Cole Chang (Pleasantville, N.Y./Collegiate School) allowed one run on eight hits to improve his record on the season to 5-1. Junior lefty
Anson Justi (Columbia, Md./McDonogh School) pitched the seventh for his first save of the season.
UW-Stout started the second game by scoring three runs in each of the first two innings for a 6-1 lead. Macalester loaded the bases with one out in the second, but scored just one run on an infield single by Castagnetti that plated Abelson. The bases were loaded again for the Scots in the top of the sixth inning, with Abelson coming home on a wild pitch. That's all Macalester could do off the Blue Devils' pitching, which allowed two runs on seven hits and three walks over seven innings.
Abelson went 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs and a walk. Castagnetti and Low also had two hits apiece, as Low finished the day 5-for-6.
The doubleheader marked the final collegiate games for seniors Berk,
Jonathan Melms (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran),
Griffen Gallagher (Westport, Conn./IMG Pendleton Academies),
Nick Sia (Crofton, Md./South River) and
Phillip Stuhr (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska).
