NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Macalester dropped both ends of its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Carleton as the Knights scored runs in their final at bats in both games for 8-7 and 7-6 wins.
In game one, it was a sixth-inning, two-out, grand slam home run by Hayden Tsutsui which turned an 8-5 Scots' lead into a 9-8 Knights' win. In game two, Jared Zoellmer's walk-off RBI singled plate Griffin Bolte with the winning run in the 12th inning, after Bolte had hit a solo home run in the 10th inning to tie the game.
Macalester jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning of game one and, when
Tom Forster hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning, the Scots led 8-2 but the hosts responded with a seven-run sixth.
Forster was 3-for-3 in the opener with a double, home run and three RBI while
Sam Berk and
Phillip Stuhr both collected a pair of hits.
Joseph Aulisi worked five strong innings before running into trouble in the sixth and turning the ball over to
Forest Redlin.
The Scots again opened an early lead as Berk and
Ben Castagnetti pulled off a double steal in the second, with Berk stealing home and Castagnetti scoring after stealing second on an errant throw.
After giving up three runs in the bottom of the second, Forster singled home a pair of runs in the top of the third and scored on a Berk double.
Carleton scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and the scored remained tied at 5-5 until Berk ripped his third double of the day in the top of the 10th, plating
Alex Baretta with the go-ahead run. However, Bolte answered with his home run in the bottom of the inning and the Knights completed the sweep in the 12th inning.
Brendan O'Connor was stellar in a relief role, working six and one-third innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out five. However, he did not figure in the final decision.
Macalester is back in action, Tuesday, when it travels to Moorhead for a 2:30 p.m. MIAC doubleheader at Concordia.
