Softball: Macalester swept by Gustavus, falling 8-3 and 3-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Macalester College softball team welcomed Gustavus Adolphus to the Macalester Softball Complex for a pair of conference games Thursday afternoon. The Scots dropped game one, 8-3 after suffering a six-run fourth inning by the Gusties. Macalester fell in game two, 2-0.

With the losses, the Scots fall to 17-15 overall and 5-10 in the MIAC. Gustavus Adolphus improves to 22-12 overall and 12-4 in conference action.

Game One: Gustavus 8, Macalester 3

Macalester started strong in game one, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning after Hali Englert hit a two-run home run, her fourth of the season.

The Gusties stole one run back in the top of the third and then posted a huge fourth inning where they scored six runs on seven hits and one Macalester error.

With a 7-2 advantage, Gustavus scored once more in the top of the fifth and gave up one run to Macalester in the bottom of the inning on a home run by Saraswati Wilson, her sixth this season.

With a final score of 8-3, Macalester posted four total hits to the Gusties' 14. Hannah Heacox earned the win on the mound for Gustavus after giving up just four hits and striking out 13 Macalester batters.

Miranda Stokes started on the mound for the Scots, pitching three solid innings before enduring a tough fourth. She gave up 13 hits and struck out five in the game, her record falling to 7-7 this season.

Morghan Bean made her debut on the mound for Macalester, relieving Stokes after 4.1 innings. Bean pitched 2.2 innings, gave up just one hit and no runs. She struck out three for a solid first outing.

Wilson and Englert led the Scots offensively; both recording two-for-three performances at the plate with one home run each.

Game Two: Gustavus 2, Macalester 0

In game two, Gustavus kept their offensive consistency going. The Gusties scored one run in both the top of the first and second innings. They snuck one more run across the plate in the top of the fifth as they inched their way closer to a second win.

The Scots were unable to get their bats going again, finishing with just three hits as Gustavus posted nine.

Brittany Ehmann started on the mound for Macalester and pitched seven complete innings. She had a strong outing as she gave up nine hits, three runs and struck out five. Unfortunately, the Scots offense was unable to earn those runs back.

It was the Macalester seniors that picked up the few hits again today. Miranda Stokes, Abby Cox and Sasa Wilson collected the lone hits in game two. On the day, Macalester seniors produced all seven hits.

Macalester will return to action on Saturday, April 18 as they make the trek to Moorhead, Minn. to take on the Concordia Cobbers in a doubleheader scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m. Follow the game online at: http://concordiamn.prestosports.com/sports/sball/2014-15/boxscores/20150418_frrl.xml
