MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team traveled to Moorhead, Minn. today to take on Concordia College in a MIAC doubleheader. The Scots held on to an early 4-0 lead to beat the Cobbers 4-3 in game one. In game two,
Brittany Ehmann gave up just one hit, allowing the Scots to cruise to a 3-0 victory.
With the sweep, Macalester improves to 19-15 overall and 7-10 in the MIAC. Concordia Moorhead drops to 9-20 overall and 3-15 in conference action.
Game One: Macalester 4, Concordia 3 Macalester started out strong in game one as
Nikki Caicedo roped a two-RBI double to score
Miranda Stokes and
Saraswati Wilson in the top of the first inning to take an early lead.
The Scots were able to get two additional runs across the plate in the top of the second after Wilson hit a two-run home run over the center field fence to score herself and
G.G. Gunther (who reached on a double).
The Cobbers made a late comeback, scoring one in the bottom of the sixth and two in the seventh. Macalester catcher
Nikki Caicedo picked off Concordia's runner at third in the bottom of the seventh to put an end to Concordia's rally and secure a 4-3 victory.
Macalester collected five hits in the game; Concordia finished with four. Wilson and Caicedo led the way going two-for-three at the plate and each collecting two RBI's. Gunther added a double and a run scored.
Miranda Stokes started on the mound, pitching four complete innings. Stokes gave up just one hit, no runs and struck out two to earn the win, her record improving to 8-6 this year.
Morghan Bean pitched three relief innings, giving up three hits and no earned runs after facing 16 batters.
Game Two: Macalester 3, Concordia 0 Macalester scored three big runs in the top of the first inning to start game two.
Saraswati Wilson led off with a single and was followed up by a base hit bunt by
G.G. Gunther.
Hali Englert reached on an error and the trio was hit in off of a bases clearing three-RBI double by first year
Lisa Semro.
With a three run lead, it was
Brittany Ehmann who took over. Ehmann pitched seven innings and gave up just one hit and struck out three to earn the win. Her record improved to 9-7 this year.
The Scots finished with four hits in the game led by Wilson who connected on two. Gunther and Semro each added one.
Macalester will tentatively be completing a make-up game versus St. Ben's tomorrow. Game time will depend on weather. The Scots next regular scheduled game is slated for Wednesday, April 22 when they host St. Mary's in a doubleheader at 4:30 and 6:30 p.m.
