ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College softball team matched up against the University of St. Thomas (25-5 overall, 9-3 MIAC) in Friday evening competition. The Scots fell to the no. 17 ranked Tommies in both games, dropping the first 8-0 in six innings and falling in the second, 8-3.
Macalester moved to 16-11 overall and 4-6 in the MIAC following the day.
Game One: St. Thomas 8, Macalester 0 (Six Innings) The University of St. Thomas made it difficult for Macalester to get on the board in game one. Tommie's pitcher, Kendra Bowe, threw six complete innings and gave up just three hits. She struck out 11 batters out of 22 faced.
Miranda Stokes collected two of the three total hits for the Scots.
Brittany Ehmann chalked up the third hit in the game, a double to left field in the bottom of the fifth.
Miranda Stokes started on the mound for Macalester, throwing five innings and giving up six hits and four earned runs before being relieved by
Brittany Ehmann. Ehmann threw the final inning, giving up two hits and three runs.
Game Two: St. Thomas 8, Macalester 3 The Scots came out fighting in game two. After St. Thomas scored a quick run in the top of the first, Macalester answered with a run of their own, the result of
Miranda Stokes hitting an RBI single down the third base line to score
Saraswati Wilson (who reached on a base hit).
St. Thomas punched in another run in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead. The Scots tied it up once again in the bottom half of the inning after Sasa Wilson hit an RBI single to left field to score
Brittany Ehmann who doubled to start the inning.
Tied up at two apiece, St. Thomas broke the game open when they scored two more runs in the top of the third, one in the fourth and three in the sixth.
With an 8-2 lead, Macalester was able to get one more run across in the bottom of the sixth after
Hali Englert singled through the right side for an RBI.
The Tommies finished with 11 hits in the game; Macalester with six. Wilson led the way, finishing with a two-for-four performance at the plate and one RBI. Stokes, Englert, Ehmann and Slater each recorded one hit. On the day, the Scots collected nine total hits, all produced by senior members of the team.
Brittany Ehmann started on the mound in game two, pitching seven complete innings and giving up 11 hits. She struck out two batters and walked just two. With the loss, Ehmann moves to 8-6 on the mound this season.
Macalester will return to action on Sunday, April 12 when they travel to St. Joseph, Minn. to take on the College of Saint Benedict in a doubleheader slated for 1 p.m. Follow Sunday's games online at:
