ON TAPMacalester will play its second of three doubleheaders at the Irish Sports Dome when it takes on Northwestern this evening. The first game of the twinbill is slated for 6 p.m.
LAST WEEKThe Scots opened the 2015 season with a doubleheader sweep of Minnesota-Morris, Sunday, claiming a 7-4 win in game one and a 14-0, five-inning, win in game two.
The opener saw
Abby Cox go 5-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and a pair of stolen bases to pace a 13-hit attack. Macalaster registered four double among its 13 hits with
Saraswati Wilson and
Lisa Semro each collecting a double among their two hits.
Hali Englert also had a pair of hits in the game.
The second game of the doubleheader saw
Miranda Stokes toss a one-hitter as she faced just one batter over the minimum of 15. She did not walk a batter and struck out six in collecting the victory.
Besides her effort in the circle, she turned in a 4-for-4 performance at the plate, which included a double and two home runs, while adding six RBI. Englert added three more hits, including a home run.
WHEN LAST WE METMacalester swept a home doubleheader, April 23, 2014, from Northwestern when the teams last met.
The Scots cruised to an 8-0 win in the opening game, with Stokes providing the impetus as she began the scoring with a third-inning grand slam home run. She also picked up the win by pitching three innings in the five-inning game, allowing two hits while striking out four.
Game two saw the Eagles score seven runs in the sixth inning to take a 12-9 lead but a four-run seventh, capped by Wilson's two-run walk-off double, gave the Scots a 13-12 win
SHE'S THE BOSSJody Gabriel is in her fourth season at Macalester College. The Scots went 20-18 in Gabriel's initial season to post the school's first winning record since 1997 and wrap up the MIAC campaign with a 9-13 slate after winning just one conference game the year before.
Prior to arriving at Macalester, Gabriel served as head coach at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls for four years. She led the Falcons to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season and playoff championships in 2011 as the team finished with a 28-15 overall record and a four-game appearance in the NCAA Division III playoffs. UW-River Falls went 108-60 during her four seasons leading the program and never had a losing record in the competitive WIAC.
Gabriel was selected 2011 WIAC Coach of the Year and her staff was named 2011 Great Lakes Region Coaching Staff of the Year. UW-River Falls was ranked No. 19 in the final national poll and went undefeated at home with a 14-0 record. Gabriel also taught full-time in the Hudson (Wis.) school district as a secondary social science instructor while coaching at UW-River Falls.
Gabriel was an assistant coach with the Falcons for five seasons before serving as interim head coach. She also coached as an assistant for two years at Saint Mary's University of Minnesota, where the Cardinals were co-MIAC champions in 2001 and placed second in 2002. She has also coached for various teams at the high school and traveling levels in the Twin Cities.
Gabriel played collegiately at UW-River Falls from 1994-96. The 1994 team won the WIAC title and competed in the NCAA Division III playoffs. She earned her undergraduate degree in accounting in 1996 and her M.S.E. degree (social studies) from UW-River Falls in 2000.
Up NextMacalester will return to action March 15 when it opens its 10-game spring trip to Clermont, Fla., with a pair of games at the National Training Center. The first of the two games sees the Scots taking on William Paterson, at 5 p.m. EDT, while game two will see the Scots take on St. Lawrence at 7 p.m., EDT.
