ST. PAUL, Minn. – Five members of the Macalester College softball team were recognized by the MIAC, as the conference announced its year-end awards today. Juniors
Martha Miller (Medford, Wis./Medford) and
Elizabeth Welch (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) and sophomore
Safiya Butler (St. Louis, Mo./Whitefield School) and were named to the All-MIAC team, while juniors
Tess Bojorquez (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente) and
Callia Holland (Akron, Ohio/Hawken) received All-MIAC honorable mention.
Last week Miller was named to the All-Region IX third team after excelling as a pitcher, fielder and hitter. She was the Scots' top pitcher this season, posting a record of 12-11 and an earned run average of 3.45 in 32 appearances and 29 starts. Miller led the MIAC in innings pitched with 152 and games started while ranking second with 128 strikeouts. In two seasons at Macalester, she is 23-18 with an ERA of 3.31 and 202 strikeouts in 251 2/3 innings pitched. Miller also contributed at the plate, batting .323 with 43 hits, 23 runs, nine doubles and a team-best 33 runs batted in, which ranked 11th in the MIAC. In a victory over Buena Vista on Mar. 1, Miller went 3-for-3 with two runs, a double, a homer and four RBIs.
Welch returns to the All-MIAC team after earning all-conference honors in 2024. The Scots' starter at first base, she also saw playing time at catcher and second base. Welch batted .348 with 46 hits, 32 runs and 25 RBIs while committing just one error in 249 chances (.996). She drove in six runs in a 13-6 victory over Amherst on Mar. 15 and scored four runs in a win at Augsburg on April 8. In a game in Florida against Worcester State on Mar. 18, Welch registered her 100th career hit to help the Scots win, 8-3. In 121 games, she has 132 hits, 73 runs and 70 RBIs in her career.
Butler had a breakout year for the Scots as the starting center fielder, also garnering a spot on the All-Region third team. She batted .423 with 55 hits, 39 runs and 27 stolen bases in 29 attempts. Butler tied for second in the MIAC in both hits and stolen bases and ranked seventh in runs. In 10 games during Spring Break at THE Spring Games, she batted .570 (19-for-38) with 14 runs, five RBIs and 10 stolen bases in 11 attempts, earning MIAC Player of the Week honors on Mar. 23. In 80 games as a Scot, Butler has 94 hits, 61 runs and a .387 career batting average.
Bojorquez receives All-MIAC honorable mention after earning All-MIAC and All-Region honors last year. Like Miller, she also had an impact as a pitcher, fielder and batter, ranking second on the team with a batting average of .373 while posting a 5-4 record with an ERA of 4.15 in 19 pitching appearances. At the plate, Bojorquez registered a career-best 47 hits to go with 19 runs, two homers and 18 RBIs. She had 14 games with two or more hits, and notched her 100th career hit in the second game against Carleton on April 26. In her career as a Scots, she has 108 hits, 20 doubles and 68 RBIs in 119 games.
Holland received All-MIAC honorable mention for the first time in her career. She tied for the team lead with five home runs while batting a career-best .313 with 36 hits, eight doubles and 24 RBIs. In a 7-4 victory at Hamline on April 11, Holland blasted a three-run home run in the top of the seventh to clinch the win. She also hit a three-run homer and had six RBIs in a victory at St. Scholastica on Mar. 30. in 109 games, she has 77 hits, 48 runs, eight home runs and 58 RBIs.
Saint Benedict's Olivia Tautges was named the MIAC Player of the Year, while her teammate Ellie Peterson was selected the Pitcher of the Year. Hannah Yeager of St. Olaf was chosen the Rookie of the Year, and Rachael Click of Saint Benedict is the MIAC Coach of the Year.
