Softball: Macalester slated for non-conference doubleheaders this week.

Scots scheduled for two non-league twinbills before starting MIAC slate.

ON TAP
With the postponement of Wednesday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener versus St. Olaf to April 4, Macalester (8-5, 0-0 MIAC) is slated to play a pair of non-conference doubleheaders this week.

Thursday, the Scots will face Martin Luther (4-1, 0-0 UMAC) in a pair of games at the Irish Sports Dome in Rosemount, Minn., beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, they are scheduled for a twinbill in Mankato, Minn., at Bethany Lutheran (6-6, 0-0 UMAC).

LAST WEEK
Macalester went 4-5 in nine games on its spring trip to Clermont, Fla.

After splitting two games on March 15, a 5-0 loss to No. 22 William Paterson and an 8-5 win over St. Lawrence, the Scots dropped three consecutive games before finishing the week by winning three of their final four games.

The power surge Macalester experienced in its first four games of the season, at the Irish Sports Dome, continued in Florida as the Scots added seven home runs to their total and rank second in the MIAC with 14.

WHEN LAST WE MET
The last time Macalester and Martin Luther got together was also in the Irish Sports Dome, March 12, 2013, and the Scots swept the doubleheader, 13-3 and 11-2.

Miranda Stokes was 5-for-6 with two home runs and six RBI in the twinbill as she hit for the cycle and was the winning pitcher in game two.

Macalester and Bethany Lutheran got together for a doubleheader Feb. 28, 2014, at the Augsburg Dome and the Scots came away with five-inning wins, 14-3 and 11-0.

Macalester allowed just four hits in the twinbill, including Brittany Ehmann's one-hit shutout in game two. Stokes pitched two innings of shutout relief in game one and went 7-for-7 at the plate with two home runs, a double and 10 RBI.

POWERING UP
While ranking second in the conference as a team in home runs, Macalester has two of the top four home run hitters in the league. Stokes, with five home runs, leads the conference while Saraswati Wilson is one of three MIAC players with four.

SHE'S THE BOSS
Jody Gabriel is in her fourth season at Macalester College, sporting a 61-70 record and a seven-year career record of 169-130. The Scots went 20-18 in Gabriel's initial season to post the school's first winning record since 1997 and wrapped up the MIAC campaign with a 9-13 slate after winning just one conference game the year before.

Prior to arriving at Macalester, Gabriel served as head coach at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls for four years. She led the Falcons to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season and playoff championships in 2011 as the team finished with a 28-15 overall record and a four-game appearance in the NCAA Division III playoffs. UW-River Falls went 108-60 during her four seasons leading the program and never had a losing record in the competitive WIAC.

Gabriel was selected 2011 WIAC Coach of the Year and her staff was named 2011 Great Lakes Region Coaching Staff of the Year. UW-River Falls was ranked No. 19 in the final national poll and went undefeated at home with a 14-0 record. Gabriel also taught full-time in the Hudson (Wis.) school district as a secondary social science instructor while coaching at UW-River Falls.

Gabriel was an assistant coach with the Falcons for five seasons before serving as interim head coach. She also coached as an assistant for two years at Saint Mary's University of Minnesota, where the Cardinals were co-MIAC champions in 2001 and placed second in 2002. She has also coached for various teams at the high school and traveling levels in the Twin Cities.

Gabriel played collegiately at UW-River Falls from 1994-96. The 1994 team won the WIAC title and competed in the NCAA Division III playoffs. She earned her undergraduate degree in accounting in 1996 and her M.S.E. degree (social studies) from UW-River Falls in 2000.
