CLERMONT, Fla. – Macalester College softball competed in their third day of play at the NTC Spring Games on Tuesday, falling in their first game to Worcester State, 8-7. The Scots redeemed themselves in game two, defeating Allegheny College 7-2 after scoring four runs in the sixth.
With the split, the Scots move to 6-4 overall this season. Worcester State improves to 5-1 and Allegheny falls to 1-3.
Game One: Worcester State 8, Macalester 7 The Scots started out strong in the top of the first inning, putting together five runs on four hits and one Worcester State error.
Abby Cox got things rolling, doubling to right center hitting in the two-spot.
Miranda Stokes singled through the left side for an RBI to score Cox.
Brittany Ehmann and
Morghan Bean finished the inning off each with a hit; Ehmann's driving in two runs and Bean's one.
The Lancers fought back in the bottom half of the first, scoring two runs.
Macalester added one more run in the top of the second on a homerun hit by
Miranda Stokes to go up 6-2. Worcester answered right back with a solo shot hit by Taylor Hanley to make it a three-run game (6-3) after just two complete innings.
The Scots' offense took a dive as Worcester held them scoreless in the third, fourth and fifth innings. The Lancers put five more runs on the board in those innings and took an 8-6 lead after five innings of play.
In the top of six, Macalester was able to get one more run across on an RBI single hit by
Lisa Semro. In an effort to tie up the game, the Scots were called out at the plate, falling short 8-7 in scoring.
Macalester couldn't make it happen in the seventh, coming up short to Worcester state by one run.
Miranda Stokes pitched six complete innings for the Scots, giving up eight hits and five earned runs. She struck out four batters. Stokes' record on the mound this season moves to 2-3 overall.
Macalester collected seven hits in the game; Worcester finished with eight.
Miranda Stokes led the Scots offensively with two hits and two RBI's. Cox, Ehmann, Semro, Bean, and
Anna Munson each collected one.
Game Two: Macalester 7, Allegheny 2 Macalester found their offensive edge in their match-up with Allegheny. The Scots produced 12 hits and gave up just five with
Brittany Ehmann on the mound.
After getting down by one run in the first, Macalester scored two in the second, one in the third and four in the sixth to secure a 7-2 victory.
Saraswati Wilson had the hot bat, producing three hits and two RBI's. Ehmann and Semro both collected two hits. Semro also punched in two RBI's.
Senior
Anna Munson collected her first double of the season, driving a liner to left center to spark the sixth inning run.
Ehmann had an impressive performance on the mound, throwing seven complete innings, giving up five hits and striking out five. Ehmann's record on the mound improves to 3-1 this season.
Macalester will return to action at the Spring Games on Thursday, March 19 as they take on Fredonia (Ill.) and Plattsburgh State at Hancock Park in Clermont at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
