CLERMONT, Fla. – Macalester College softball continued play at the Spring Games on Monday, falling in their first game of the day to Concordia University Wisconsin, 6-0. The Scots followed up with a tough loss to the University of Wisconsin – River Falls, 7-6, as international tiebreaker rules were in place in the bottom of the eighth inning and an RBI-double ended the game.
With the defeats, the Scots fall to 5-3 overall this season. Concordia (Wis.) improves to 5-4 and UW-River Falls rises to 6-5.
Game One: Concordia Wisconsin 6, Macalester 0 The Concordia (Wis.) Falcons kept finding a way to score, securing one run in the top of the first, three in the third and one more in both the fourth and sixth innings.
Miranda Stokes started on the mound for the Scots, pitching four complete innings, giving up five hits.
Logan Tootle made her spring break pitching debut, coming in for three complete relief innings, giving up five hits and one earned run. Stokes was credited with the loss, her record on the mound this season moving to 2-2.
Macalester collected seven total hits in the contest; Concordia-Wis. finished with 10.
Erin Slater, who finished with three hits, led the Scots offensively.
Saraswati Wilson,
Abby Cox,
Hali Englert, and
Lisa Semro each tacked on a hit as well.
Sophomore catcher,
Nikki Caicedo assisted in picking off three Falcon base runners.
Christine Sharon recorded the win on the mound for Concordia. Sharon threw five scoreless innings.
Game Two: Macalester 6, UW-River Falls 7 It was a battle to the finish in game two as Macalester took a 3-2 lead after four and extended their lead to 5-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
River Falls refused to go down easy; scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie it up at five-all.
Demonstrating senior poise,
Saraswati Wilson homered in the top of the seventh to give the Scots a 6-5 lead heading into the bottom half of the inning.
River Falls battled back again, this time grabbing their sixth and tying run off an RBI single by Michelle LaCasse to send the game into extras.
International tiebreaker rules went into effect in the eighth and the Scots were unable to get a run across the plate. In the bottom of the inning, it was an RBI double by Kaitlyn Lepine that scored the winning run for River Falls.
Macalester finished with 10 hits; River falls posted 14.
Brittany Ehmann threw 7.1 innings, giving up three earned runs after facing 40 batters. Ehmann's record moves to 2-1 on the mound this season.
Wilson, Cox, Semro and Stokes each collected two hits in the game. Cox and Semro posted two RBI's each courtesy of collecting their first homeruns of the season.
The Scots hit three homeruns in the game, the third coming from Wilson (her third this year).
Macalester will return to action at the Spring Games on Tuesday as they take on Worcester State and Allegheny College at Hancock Park in Clermont.
