CLERMONT, Fla. – Macalester softball kicked off their 10-game slide at the National Training Center Spring Games with a 5-0 loss to #22 ranked William Paterson. The Scots redeemed themselves in game two, defeating St. Lawrence 8-5 and outhitting the Saints 14 to nine.
Game One: #22 William Paterson 5, Macalester 0 William Paterson caused the most damage in the bottom of the first as they scored four runs on six hits to start the game.
The Scots were able to put a stop to the Pioneer's dominant offense, holding them scoreless for the second, third, fourth and fifth innings. William Paterson tacked on their final run in the bottom of the sixth by drawing a bases-loaded walk.
Macalester couldn't quite get their bats in sync, facing top pitching and totaling just two hits in the game.
Brittany Ehmann and
Morghan Bean each finished with a hit for the Scots.
Miranda Stokes started on the mound for Macalester, pitching one inning before being replaced by
Brittany Ehmann. Ehmann went five complete innings, giving up three hits and one run. Stokes was credited with the loss, moving her record to 2-1 on the mound this season.
The Scots' catcher,
Nikki Caicedo had seven putouts in the game and threw out a runner stealing second.
Game Two: St. Lawrence 5, Macalester 8 Miranda Stokes got the nod in game two, pitching 4.1 innings and giving up seven hits and three earned runs after facing 23 batters.
Brittany Ehmann closed out the final innings and was on the mound as the Scots overcame a 5-5 fifth inning jam to go up two (7-5) in the top of the sixth and record an 8-5 final victory.
Ehmann was credited with the win, improving her record on the mound to 2-0 this season.
Down 0-1 after one inning of play, the Scots battled back in the top of the second scoring a tying run on an RBI single to left by senior,
Saraswati Wilson.
Macalester's big offensive surge came in the top of the fourth when the Scots posted four runs on three hits to take a 5-1 lead.
Abby Cox and
Hali Englert each drew RBI walks in the inning;
Brittany Ehmann hit an RBI single to third base to score Wilson.
The Saints caught fire in the bottom of five after stringing together four runs on three hits and one Macalester error to tie the game up at five-all.
The Scots fought back, scoring two in the top of the sixth thanks to RBI's by
Hali Englert and
Nikki Caicedo to take a 7-5 lead. Hot-hitting first year,
Lisa Semro led off Macalester in the top of the seventh, crushing the ball to right-center for her first collegiate triple.
Abby Cox laid down an RBI bunt to score Semro and give the Scots a conclusive 8-5 lead.
Macalester finished with 14 hits; St. Lawrence totaling nine.
Lisa Semro finished with a game-high three hits.
Saraswati Wilson,
Miranda Stokes,
Hali Englert and
Brittany Ehmann each posted two. Wilson, Cox and Englert punched in two RBI's apiece.
With the split, Macalester advances to 5-1 overall this season. William Paterson advances to 4-0 and St. Lawrence falls to 1-3 overall. The Scots will return to action at the Spring Games on Monday March 16 as they take on Concordia University (Wis.) and the University of Wisconsin - River Falls at 1 and 3 p.m. in Clermont, Fla. at Hancock Park Field 5.
