ST. PAUL, Minn. – A goal by senior midfielder
Lydia Chodosh (Los Angeles, Calif./Culver City) in the 48th minute gave the Macalester College women's soccer team a 1-0 triumph over the College of St. Benedict Wednesday night at Macalester Stadium. The conference win clinches a spot in the MIAC Tournament for the Scots, who improve to 9-2-4 overall and 6-1-3 in league play. The Blazers fall to 7-7-2, 5-5 MIAC.
With the cold and snowy conditions limiting the number of scoring chances in the first half, Macalester struck early in the second half. A header by senior midfielder
Lily Jilk (River Falls, Wis./Shattuck-St. Mary's) was deflected by a defender towards the middle of the field. Chodosh ran onto the ball, dribbled to the top of the penalty area and blasted a shot into the goal for a 1-0 lead. The Blazers took five shots following Chodosh's goal, including two that were on frame, but sophomore goalkeeper
Rachel Wilson-King (Tucson, Ariz./St. Gregory College Prep) made both saves to preserve the win.
The victory marked the Scots' fifth win in a row and extended their streak without a loss to 10 games. Currently, Macalester is tied with Augsburg and Gustavus for second in the MIAC behind St. Thomas, who has clinched the regular-season title. A victory in the final game of the regular season at Bethel on Saturday would give the Scots at least third place and a home game in the first round. A win and a Gustavus tie or loss means second place for Macalester and a first-round bye.
Wilson-King registered three saves for her third consecutive shutout. Heather Kaluzniak finished with four saves for St. Benedict.
Before the game, Macalester honored its seniors Chodosh, Jilk,
Hannah Pollard-Garber (Rockville, Md./Thomas Sprigg Wootton),
Hannah Svec (Dummerston, Vt./Brattleboro Union),
Pam Rosen (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Marion),
Kassia Massey (Cambridge, Mass./Ringe and Latin),
Ana Mikkelson-Lindholm (New Ulm, Minn./New Ulm) and
Maddie Kornfeld (Denver, Colo./East).
Macalester concludes the regular season with a league game at Bethel on Saturday, Oct. 31, beginning at 3:30 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
