Box Score ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Austin Burrows scored a pair of goals six minutes apart in the first half and Macalester dominated nearly every facet of play in a 4-0, season-opening win over Northwestern.
The Scots got on the scoreboard in the game's 17th minute when
Charlie Spurr worked the ball up the right side and gave it to Burrows on the edge of the penalty box. Burrows quickly crossed the ball to
Alan Schembri-Wismayer who found
Dylan Wong and his shot got past a diving Jordan Salm and inside the left goal post.
After helping to set up the game's first goal, Burrows scored the next two himself.
The first came in the 26th minute when Spurr's shot hit the crossbar and rebounded directly to Burrows, who proceeded to bury his shot for a 2-0 Macalester lead.
Less than six minutes later Burrows found Schembri-Wismayer's in-swinging corner kick from the left side and managed to tap the ball across the goal line during a scramble.
Despite a number of scoring opportunities, the Scots were unable to build on the lead until the 80th minute when Wong's short crossing pass found
Ionatan Kuperwajs on the left side outside of the crease and the rookie put the ball into the right side of the net.
In all, the Scots held a 23-4 advantage in shots on goal and an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Zeke Vainer stopped three shots to record the save for Macalester, which returns to action tomorrow with a 2 p.m. matinee at Macalester Stadium versus Milwaukee School of Engineering.
