Men’s Soccer: Macalester Ranked 13th in Final National Poll

| By:
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team is ranked 13th in the final United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Top 25 poll, the organization announced Tuesday. The Scots finished the year with a 17-5 record, won the MIAC Playoffs and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament this fall.

Macalester, coached by Gregg Olson, won its final six regular-season games to earn the No. 2 seed in the MIAC Playoffs, then beat Gustavus and top-seeded St. Olaf to capture the program's second MIAC Playoff championship. The title gave the Scots an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, sending the Scots to the national tournament for the 13th time.

Although Macalester received votes in the final regular season United Soccer Coaches Division III rankings, the Scots were ranked sixth in the NCAA Power Index, earning the right to host first and second round games on Nov. 15 and 16. In front of two large and boisterous crowds at Macalester Stadium, the Scots defeated Illinois Wesleyan, 2-1 in the first round before earning a thrilling 2-1 victory over No. 22 UW-Eau Claire in the second round to advance to the Sweet 16. The magical run ended there, as Macalester lost to No. 7 Wheaton, 1-0 at St. Olaf, snapping the team's winning streak at 10.

Individual awards followed, with seniors Nick Kent (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park) and Ondieki Maina (Kensington, Calif./El Cerrito), and junior Kasdan Blattman (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine) making the All-MIAC team, and junior Zach Liptzin (Denver, Colo./Northfield) and Gaven Johnson (Harrison, Ohio/William Henry Harrison) receiving All-MIAC honorable mention. Kent, Maina and Blattman were selected to the All-Region first team, with Maina and Blattman named All-Americans.

The team's 17 victories are the second-most in the program's history behind only the 1998 squad that finished 18-4 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
