Men’s Soccer: Macalester Comes Back to Tie UW-Platteville in Season Opener

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The Macalester College men's soccer team kicked off the 2026 campaign with a 1-1 tie at UW-Platteville Tuesday afternoon at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium. The Scots, who were 17-5 and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament last year, are 8-0-4 in season openers since 2014. The Pioneers were 8-6-5 in 2025.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 27th minute, when Westley Hankes headed home a corner kick from Justin Williams for a 1-0 lead. In the second half, the 13th-ranked Scots capitalized in the 70th minute, also on a corner kick. A pair of first years connected, with forward John Albright (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) heading in the cross from forward Charlie Hall (Washington, D.C./Jackson Reed) to tie the score at 1-1. Neither team put a shot on goal the rest of the way, as the game ended in a draw.

Senior goalkeeper Drew Moseman (St. Paul, Minn./Central) started in goal for Macalester and made three saves. Sophomore Justin Ratner (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) played the second half and registered one save. Connor Waite made two saves for the Pioneers, who held a 10-6 edge in shots taken.

The Scots play another strong regional foe in Luther College on Friday, Sept. 4. The game starts at 6:00 p.m. in Decorah, Iowa.
