Men's Golf: Macalester prepares for final fall event of 2014

Scots to host St. Olaf in match play at Highland National, Saturday.

Macalester wraps up the fall portion of its 2014-15 schedule this weekend when it hosts St. Olaf in a match-play event at Highland National Golf Course, Saturday, at 1 p.m.
 
The Event
Saturday's match with St. Olaf will feature six singles matches at the par-72, 6,461-yard Highland National Golf Course. The event will start with the first group of two singles matches teeing off at 1 p.m.
 
Last Week
The Scots finished ninth at the 2014 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Golf Championships at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids, Minn. After shooting an opening-round 332, Macalester turned in a second-round 311, its third-best round of the season. The Scots followed that with a 317, their fifth-best round of the season, over the final 18 holes of the 54-hole event.
 
Dan Shi led Macalester with a 54-hole score of 234 to tie for 19th place. His second-round 75 matched his best round of season and his 153 over the final 36 holes were his best back-to-back rounds of the season.
 
Josh Wingardner's 78-81-159 over the final 36 holes also for his best back-to-back rounds of the season and he finished as the team's number two golfer for the first time this season, shooting 242 to tie for 37th.
 
Blaze Beecher was the team's most consistent golfer, shooting 84-80-80—244 to place 41st while Drew Gumlia, after carding a first-round 91, rebounded for back-to-back 78s to finish tied for 43rd at 247 and Jack Buan, in his first conference championship, shot 84-83-88—255 to finish 46th.

He's the Boss
Tomas Adalsteinsson is in his third year as the Macalester's men's and women's golf coach, having joined the Macalester staff in 2012.

Adalsteinsson is a former golfer for Iceland's national team and, in 2000, placed 25th at the European Team Championship. In 2001 he was Icelandic Junior Champion and Icelandic Junior Tour Champion.

Prior to coming to Macalester, Adalsteinsson was the head boys' varsity golf coach at Lakeville South High School in Lakeville, Minn., and, prior to that, he was the head boys' coach at University High School in San Francisco and a junior instructor at his home course, Keilir Golf Club in Iceland.

Adalsteinsson led Lakeville South during the spring season of 2012 to second place in the South Suburban Conference. The team set two school records during the season, and ended fifth in its section, only four shots from first place and a spot in the state championships.

In his teens, Adalsteinsson golfed with the Icelandic youth national teams from 1998-2003. He has experience coaching both golf and soccer. Adalsteinsson served as an assistant women's soccer coach at Carleton College and has also been a staff coach for Eden Prairie Soccer Club.

Adalsteinsson is a graduate of the University of Iceland and received his master's in sports psychology from John F. Kennedy University in California. Adalsteinsson has provided sport psychology consultation to individuals and teams.

Did You Know?
Macalester's first two rounds this season were the best rounds in school history. The Scots opened the season by shooting a school-record 300 in a dual match with St. Mary's (8/29/14) on the par-73 Emerald Greens Silver Course. The next day, they shot 301 in defeating Crown College in a dual match at Island View Golf Club.
 
In his first collegiate match, Jack Buan shot an even-par, 73, at the Mac/Mary's Dual (8/29/14). It was the first round of even-par or better by a Macalester golfer since Tyler Hanck shot a one-under par, 71, at the Saint John's Spring Invitational (4/29/12) at the Monticello Country Club.
