Baseball: Scots shut out Gustavus in game one

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Justin Kleschen
Justin Kleschen (So., Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) tossed a shutout for a 5-0 Macalester win in the opening game at Gustavus, but the host-Gusties won the nightcap 10-4 to remain in second place in the MIAC.

In his last four appearances, including two starts, Kleschen has pitched 16 2/3 innings, while allowing just two earned runs, 15 hits and not a single walk.  He scattered seven hits and stranded eight runners on base to register Mac's first shutout of the season.

Leading 1-0 on a first-inning sacrifice fly by Colin Carpenter (Jr., Harvard, Ill.), the Scots added four runs in the top of the fourth to give Kleschen a more comfortable margin.  In the fourth, Macalester had two hits and took advantage of a couple Gustie errors.  Ross Bronfenbrenner (Jr., San Anselmo, Calif. / Marin Academy) drove in a run on a sac fly, Nick Sia (Fy., Gambrills, Md. / South River) doubled in two, and Tom Forster (So., Stillwater, Minn.) closed out the rally with an RBI double.

Macalester was held to five hits in the second game and allowed runs in each of the first five innings.  Jimmy Belfont (Sr., Olney, Md. / Our Lady of Good Counsel) went 2-for-3 with a two-run double.

The Gusties are 10-8 in the MIAC and are trying to hold off six .500 teams in a mad dash for the final five league playoff spots behind runaway regular-season champ St. Thomas.  The top six teams move on to this weekend's MIAC single-elimination tournament with the seeding based on winning percentage because not all teams will play 20 games.

The Scots (11-26 overall and 4-14 in the MIAC) close out the '13 campaign tomorrow with an MIAC twinbill at St. Olaf.
