Baseball: Macalester toppled by St. John’s

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
The Scots and Johnnies moved their MIAC baseball twinbill Friday from St. Paul to Collegeville to play in better weather and it was St. John's coming away with a sweep.  St. John's won the opener 10-6 by scoring seven unearned runs on four Mac errors.  The Johnnies held on to take game two 4-3 in a well-pitched game.

Almost all of the damage done in the first game was done in the second inning, when SJU plated seven runs in the top of the second (the Johnnies batted first) before the Scots responded with six of their own, getting RBIs from David Melms (Jr., Wauwatosa, Wis. / Wisconsin Lutheran), Ross Bronfenbrenner (Jr., San Anselmo, Calif. / Marin Academy), Jimmy Belfont (Sr., Olney, Md. / Our Lady of Good Counsel) and Colin Carpenter (Jr., Harvard, Ill.).

The Johnnies added three more runs while holding the Scots off the board the rest of the way.

Each team was held to six hits in game two, with Macalester getting a strong effort from starter Justin Kleschen (So., Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township), who allowed only two earned runs in seven innings.  With the score tied at 1-1, SJU tallied three runs in the top of the fifth, with the Scots following with two of their own to cut the lead to 4-3.  They scored on a ground out RBI and sacrifice fly after  Nick Sia (Fy., Gambrills, Md. / South River) led off with a single and moved to as Belfont followed with a double.

Carpenter had two hits in game one, while Sia and Belfont produced a pair each in game two.

This was the first of five MIAC doubleheaders in five days for the Scots, who return to the field Saturday (May 4) to play St. Olaf at Richfield High School at 1 p.m.
