In the middle of a stretch where the Scots play MIAC doubleheaders four days in a row, Macalester was handed a pair of defeats at Bethel, losing by scores of 9-1 and 12-6.
Yesterday, the Scots swept Concordia. Tomorrow, they play two at St. Thomas and Sunday they play two against Hamline at Midway Stadium before getting a couple well-deserved days off. Macalester is 9-16 overall, 2-4 in the MIAC. Bethel moves to 19-6 on the year and 6-2 in the conference and has a chance to become the first MIAC team to reach 20 wins.
Bethel only out-hit Mac 10-9 in the first game, but had two homers and two doubles, while the Scots stranded eight runner on base.
Colin Carpenter (Jr., Harvard, Ill.) went 3-for-3 for the Scots, while teammates
Tom Forster (So., Stillwater, Minn.) and
Joe Dobbins (Fy., Washington, D.C. / St. Alban's School) each picked up two hits.
Forster, who doubled in game one, hit his first collegiate home run in the nightcap, but a 7-0 Bethel first-inning advantage was too much to overcome. The Royals only out-hit Macalester 13-11, but benefited from four unearned runs.
Jimmy Belfont (Sr., Olney, Md. / Our Lady of Good Counsel) and
Sam Berk (Fy., Miami, Fla. / Palmer Trinity School) each produced a couple hits for the Scots. Belfont is batting .423 and has at least one hit in 21 of 24 games played.
