Baseball: Luther sweeps Macalester

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Luther (Ia.) held Macalester to a single run in each game to gain a sweep over the Scots, winning 2-1 in eight innings in the opener and 4-1 in the nightcap late Saturday night at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

Nathan Kellleher-Crew (Jr., Cool, Calif. / Golden Sierra), who lost a 1-0 decision a couple weeks ago to St. Scholastica, tossed another strong effort in his second start of the season,  dropped a 2-1 heart-breaker against the Norse, allowing only five hits and a walk in 7 1/3 innings of work.

Macalester scored its run in the first inning.  Ross Bronfenbrenner (Jr., San Anselmo, Calif. / Marin Academy) doubled to lead off, stole third, and scored on a Jimmy Belfont (Sr., Olney, Md. / Our Lady of Good Counsel) RBI single.  Belfont had a pair of hits in each game and his 4-for-7 performance on the night lifted his batting average on the season to .500 (8-for-16).

Luther tied the game in the top of the second and held the Scots without a run over the next second frames.

The Norse came out quickly in the second contest, plating four run in the bottom of the first after Mac took the lead on a Nick Sia (Fy., Gambrills, Md. / South River) triple and Justin Sims (Jr., Bronx, N.Y. / The Beacon School) RBI single.  Sia and Belfont each had two hits on the game.

The Scots, now 1-4, return to the Metrodome Monday (March 11) for a 9:15 p.m. twinbill with North Central (Minn.).
