Baseball: Scots go 2-8 in Arizona

The Scots finished with a 2-8 Spring Break record against quality competition at the Tucson Invitational March 15-22.  Macalester beat Wisconsin-Superior 12-2 to gain a doubleheader split on the second day of the trip, and Calvin (Mich.) in a 24-13 slugfest. 

Pitching depth hurt the team in two tough defeats.  Mac led North Park (Ill.) 16-6 in the sixth inning of the opening contest only to lose 28-17.  Then against Williams (Mass.), the Scots led 10-4 before surrendering  11 runs in the bottom of the eighth.

The Scots hit .327 during their 10 games in Arizona, led by Nick Sia (Fy., Gambrills, Md. / South River) at .444 (16-for-36) with eight RBI and Jimmy Belfont (Sr., Olney, Md. / Our Lady of Good Counsel) at .412 (14-for-34) with nine RBI.  Each scored 11 runs to lead the team.  Sia produced four triples and two doubles to give him a .722 slugging percentage.  Nick Mar (So., Sacramento, Calif. / McClatchy) batted .400,  David Melms (Sr., Wauwatosa, Wis. / Wisconsin Lutheran) hit .360, Tom Forster (So., Stillwater, Minn.) hit .333, Justin Sims (Jr., Bronx, N.Y. / The Beacon School) hit .318 and Phillip Stuhr (Fy., Onalaska, Wis.) hit .316.

The team's top pitching effort came in the 12-2 win over UW-La Crosse as C.J. Smith (Jr., Ashland, Wis.) and Alex Isaacson (Jr., Gallatin, Tenn. / Pope John Paul II) split the duties.

Mac plays Wednesday (March 27) against Wisconsin-Stout at the Metrodome at 9:45 p.m.

Friday, March 15:
vs. North Park (@Tucson, Ariz.) L 17-28 | Box score |
   * Mac's trip to Arizona appeared to be off to an excellent start as the Scots led 16-6 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, but North Park (Ill.) exploded for 13 runs in the sixth and nine more in the seventh to win by a football-like 28-17 tally.  NPU had three players each with five hits and finished with 31 on the game.  Macalester received three hits apiece from Ross Bronfenbrenner and Jimmy Belfont, while four others contributed a pair of hits.

Saturday, March 16:
vs. UW-Superior (DH) (@Tucson, Ariz.) L 4-9 box score | W 12-2 box score
    * Macalester responded from a 9-4 game one defeat to topple Wisconsin-Superior 12-2 and gain a split in Tucson, Arizona.  C.J. Smith pitched 3 2/3 innings as the starter in the nightcap, while Alex Issacson tossed the final 3 1/3 to close things out.  Nick Sia went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Nick Mar and David Melms each collected a pair of hits.

Sunday, March 17:
vs. Bemidji State (@Tucson, Ariz.) L 3-16 | box score
    * Bemidji State scored five times in the sixth inning and four in the seventh to pull away for a 16-3 victory over Macalester at the Tucson Invitational.  BSU had 17 hits, including eight for extra bases.  Mac's Jimmy Belfont went 2-for-4 and is now batting .516, and Tom Forster was 2-for-3 from the plate.  The Scots have the day off tomorrow.

Tuesday, March 19:
vs. Calvin (@Tucson, Ariz.) W 24-13 | box score
    * Macalester reached the 12-run mark for the fifth time in seven games, plating seven runs in the third, five in the fifth, four in the sixth and five in the eighth.  Colin Carpenter went 4-for-6 with four RBI and Nick Sia was 3-for-4 with four runs scored.  Added two hits apiece were Jimmy Belfont, Nick Mar, Phillip Stuhr, Sam Berk and David Melms.  The Scots are batting .379 through the first five games on the trip.

Wednesday, March 20:
vs. Wesleyan (@Tucson, Ariz.) L 5-8 | box score
vs. Williams (@Tucson, Ariz.) L 10-15 ) | box score
    *Against Wesleyan, the Scots fell behind 5-0 after a couple frames.  Ross Bronfenbrenner went 3-for-5 and Joe Dobbins was 3-for-4 for Macalester.  The Scots led Williams 10-4 only to surrender 11 runs in the bottom of the eighth.  Mac piled up 15 hits, including a pair each by Bronfenbrenner, Dobbins, Jimmy Belfont, Tom Forster, Phillip Stuhr and Justin Sims.

Thursday, March 21:
vs.UW-La Crosse (@Tucson, Ariz.) L 0-10 | box score
    * Macalester was held to six hits, half of them off the bat of Nick Sia, and were blanked for the first time on the Arizona trip.  Wisconsin-La Crosse started things out with a five-run first inning.

Friday, March 22:
vs. Pomona-Pitzer (@Tucson, Ariz.) L 2-11 | box score
vs. Wesleyan (@Tucson, Ariz.) L 1-12 | box score
    * Pomona-Pitzer allowed the Scots six hits and Wesleyan allowed just five as the 10-game trip wound down for Mac.  Jimmy Belfont and Justin Sims had a pair of hits each against Pomona-Pitzer.
