Football: Scots kept off the board

Box Score
Washington University in St. Louis and Macalester met on the football field for the first time since 1977 on a windy afternoon in St. Paul.  For quite a while, it look like neither team would score and that things would head into overtime before a winner could be decided.

However, the visiting Bears staged the game's only scoring drive when they gained possession near midfield on a fumble recovery.  A 15-yard Wash. U. touchdown run with 7:55 left in the fourth quarter put the visitors on top 7-0 following the extra point.

Macalester responded with its best series of downs on its possession following the TD.  Quarterback Samson Bialostok (Jr., North Woodmere, N.Y. / Lawrence), who spearheaded the Macalester offense with 129 rushing yards on 18 carries, got free on a 15-yard run to the Washington 1-yard line with under two minutes to go.  With a chance of forcing overtime with a touchdown and extra point, the Scots were denied by the Washington defense and ran out of downs.

Macalester's defensive effort was superb.  The Scots were led on that side of the ball by Ryan Fleming (So., Charlotte, Vt. / Champlain Valley Union) with 8 ½ tackles and a forced fumble.  Bolton Howes (Jr, Lakewood, Colo. / Dakota Ridge) had an interception and a fumble recovery and Joe Dykema (Sr., Roseville, Minn.) was in on 7 ½ tackles.

Washington quarterback Eric Daginella went 14- for-23 for 111 yards, and teammate Cody Ratermann scored the game's only touchdown, running it in from 15 yards out with 7:55 to play.

The Scots are back at home next Saturday (Nov. 2) when they host Trinity Bible (N.D.) at 6 p.m.
