Macalester finishes with winning record

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Macalester received a pair of standout pitching performances from Amanda Knopf (Sr., Boulder, Colo.) and Miranda Stokes (Fy., Perry, Utah / Box Elder) to sweep Concordia 3-2 and 2-1 Sunday in Moorhead in the 2012 season-finale.  The Scots close out at 20-18 for their first winning record since 1997 and wrap up the MIAC campaign with a 9-13 slate.

In the first game, the Scots scored once in the third inning and twice in the fifth to go up 3-0, receiving a run-producing single by Katie Fuller (So., Boulder, Colo.) in the third and getting hits in the fifth from Stokes, Knopf and Hali Englert (Fy., Castle Rock, Colo. / Castle View).

Knopf allowed 10 hits but left eight Cobbers runners stranded on base.

Stokes pitched the first six innings of the second game and Knopf pitched the seventh to pick up the save in Mac's 2-1 victory.

The Scots tied the second game 1-1 in the fourth inning on four hits, including an RBI single by Courtney Nussbaumer (Jr., Brookfield, Wis. / East).

Macalester broke the deadlock in the top of the seventh when Nussbaumer doubled to lead things off.  Pinch-runner Tara Cayton (Fy., Pleasanton, Calif. / Amador Valley) scored the game-winner  on a Sarah Birkholz (Fy., Shoreview, Minn. / Mounds View) single to center.

Three Scots finished the year with batting averages above .350: Stokes at .376, Cleo Nagy (So., Eugene, Ore. / Henry D. Sheldon) at .360 and Nussbaumer at .351.  Pitching ace Knopf finished at 11-7 with a 2.48 ERA, striking out 103 batters and walking only 22 in 124 1/3 innings in the circle.  Macalester batted .297 on the year and registered a 3.06 ERA.
