St. Thomas took over sole possession of first place by sweeping the Scots 6-1 and 8-1 on Senior Day at Macalester Field. With one doubleheader to go on the season, Macalester is 18-18 overall and 7-13 in the MIAC. The No. 18-ranked Tommies go to 19-1 in the conference and 32-6 overall.
Macalester scored its runs on solo homers to left by
Cleo Nagy (So., Eugene, Ore. / Henry D. Sheldon) in game one and
Miranda Stokes (Fy., Perry, Utah / Box Elder) in game two. Nagy's home run extends her school-record mark to nine on the season and the long blast by Stokes was her sixth.
Pitcher
Amanda Knopf (Sr., Boulder, Colo.), who was honored prior to the game as Mac's lone senior, kept Macalester alive with three scoreless innings before the Tommies plated three runs in the fourth to go up for good.
St. Thomas had 13 hits in each game, while holding Macalester to nine on the day (just two in the opener). In the nightcap, the Tommies tallied all the runs they needed when they scored three times in the top of the first frame. Stokes was 2-for-3 in game two for the Scots.
The Scots look to finish with a winning slate, or at least at .500, when they close out their first season under head coach
Jody Gabriel this Saturday (April 28) at Concordia-Moorhead. Mac is going for its first winning or .500 campaign since 1997.
