Macalester scored four runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth, and held off a seventh-inning St. Olaf threat to take the opening game of an MIAC twinbill in Northfield by a 7-4 score. The Oles avoided the sweep by winning game two 6-2.
The Scots, who are 6-3 in the opening game of their nine MIAC doubleheaders, move forward to 18-16 on the year and 7-11 in the conference. They've matched their highest win total since 1999. St. Olaf is 16-20, 8-10 in the MIAC.
In the first contest, the Oles were leading Macalester ace
Amanda Knopf (Sr., Boulder, Colo.) 1-0 through four frames before Mac put together another comeback, producing four runs on four hits in the fifth.
Erin Slater (Fy., Federal Way, Wash. / Decatur) led off with a single and pinch-runner
Tara Cayton (Fy., Pleasanton, Calif. / Amador Valley) tied the game on a
Miranda Stokes (Fy., Perry, Utah / Box Elder) RBI single. After walking, Knopf scored to give the Scots the lead on a ground out. Two more runs came across on RBI singles by
Cleo Nagy (So., Eugene, Ore. / Henry D. Sheldon) and
Katie Fuller (So., Boulder, Colo.).
Mac plated three more runs in the sixth, the first two on a double by Stokes.
Knopf gave up just three hits and a walk through five innings in the circle to improve to 10-5 on the season.
Slater went 3-for-3, while Stokes and Nagy added two hits apiece.
The Scots led 2-0 in the nightcap before St. Olaf scored five times in the bottom of the fourth.
Brittany Ehmann (Fy., Island Lake, Ill. / Wauconda) went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Macalester faces a challenge Wednesday (April 25) when they host MIAC co-leader St. Thomas on Senior Day at 4:30 p.m.
