Visiting St. Mary's broke up a pitcher's dual by scoring three eighth-inning runs, but Macalester fought right back with four runs in the bottom of the eighth, pulling out a thrilling 5-4 comeback on an
Erin Slater (Fy., Federal Way, Wash. / Decatur) walk-off RBI single. The Cardinals came back from their heart-breaker to win the nightcap 6-0.
The Scots are now 17-15 on the year and 6-10 in the MIAC. The Cards are 15-15 overall, and 9-9 in the league. With 17 wins, Macalester has its most victories since 1999 when the Scots finished 18-25-1.
Macalester's
Amanda Knopf (Sr., Boulder, Colo.) and SMU's Kayla Peterson matched pitches through the first seven frames, each surrendering just a single run, before the Cardinals took command with three in the top of the eighth to go up 4-1.
The Scots, who have staged some big late rallies this year, struck for five singles and took advantage of a couple Cardinal errors in the bottom of the eighth. An error and
Miranda Stokes (Fy., Perry, Utah / Box Elder) single were followed by a
Cleo Nagy (So., Eugene, Ore. / Henry D. Sheldon) RBI single.
Katie Fuller (So., Boulder, Colo.) produced her third hit of the game and
Courtney Nussbaumer (Jr.,Brookfield, Wis. / East) singled in Nagy to knot the score at 4-4. With two outs, Slater's single to right plated Fuller with the walk-off run.
Knopf is now 9-5 with a 2.30 ERA. She's recorded 84 strikeouts in 100 1/3 innings pitched.
St. Mary's re-grouped and led all the way in the nightcap, out-hitting Macalester 12-4.
Macalester jumps right back into MIAC action tomorrow when it travels to Northfield to take on St. Olaf.
