After dropping two-straight games in extra-innings, the Macalester softball team battled back in its' final spring break game for a huge 3-2 win over Ripon thanks to five consecutive hits in the bottom of the seventh inning, Friday in Clermont, Fla.

Heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Scots found themselves down after making a tough defensive stop in the top of the inning to hold Ripon to a 2-1 lead. After having just three hits through the first six innings, the bats finally came alive for Macalester in the seventh.

Hali Englert (Fy., Castle Rock, Colo. / Castle View) started off the Scots offensive strike with a single and was quickly followed up by another from Erin Slater to put the game-tying and winning runs on base. Courtney Nussbaumer (Jr., Brookfield, Wis. / East), who came in to pinch hit, added another single to load the bases. Sarah Birkholz (Fy., Shoreview, Minn. / Mounds View), who also came in as a pinch hitter, recorded a hit and an RBI, sending Lily Alexander (So., Takoma Park, Md. / Montgomery Blair) across the plate for the game-tying run.

After going 0-3 in her first three at bats of the game, Amanda Knopf (Sr., Boulder, Colo. / Boulder) smacked the game-winning RBI single to center, sending Sarah Blau (So., Encino, Calif. / Oakwood) home to end the game and seal the win over Ripon, which defeated Macalester 8-0 last year during its' spring break trip.

Englert finished the game 2-for-3 with one run scored, while Brittany Ehmann (Fy., Island Lake, Ill. / Wauconda) earned her second win of the season after she came in to pitch for Miranda Stokes (Fy., Perry, Utah / Box Elder) in the top of the seventh. Stokes gave up just four hits and no earned runs in six innings pitched. She also struck out seven batters.

With the win, the Scots finished 4-4 over spring break and moved to 7-5 on the season.

In the first game of the day, an RBI single from Cleo Nagy (So., Eugene, Ore. / Henry D. Sheldon) in the top of the seventh inning with two outs tied the game vs. Thiel 4-4 and forced the game to head into extra-innings. The Scots held Thiel defensively until the bottom of the ninth when the first batter of the inning sent the winning run home with an RBI single up the middle.

Despite battling back the entire game, Macalester managed just five hits and left seven runners on base. Nagy led the Scots at the plate going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Knopf, who pitched all eight innings and faced one batter in the ninth, had five strikeouts on the day. She also allowed no hits through the first four innings.

The Scots return to Minnesota for a doubleheader against Martin Luther at 2:00 p.m. on March 22 in Rosemount.
