Macalester starts spring trip with wins over Framingham, Franciscan

The Macalester Scots softball team started off its spring trip Monday in Clermont, Fla., with a 6-4 win over Framingham State University (Mass.) and a 12-4 win over Franciscan University (Ohio) after having the two opening games cancelled on Sunday due to inclement weather.
 
In the first game of the day, the Scots pulled off a big win over Framingham thanks to an all-around effort both offensively and defensively. Cleo Nagy (So., Eugene, Ore. / Henry D. Sheldon) led the Scots at the plate going 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs, while Brittany Ehmann (Fy., Island Lake, Ill. / Wauconda) earned her first collegiate win pitching four innings and striking out seven batters.
 
Amanda Knopf (Sr., Boulder, Co. / Boulder)started off the game for the Scots with a double and scored the team's first run, putting the Scots up early. Framingham quickly answered back in the bottom of the first when lead-off batter Taylor Ezold hit a home run.
 
The Scots responded in the third with back-to-back homeruns from Nagy, a two-run shot, and Miranda Stokes (Fy., Perry, Utah / Box Elder), immediately followed with a solo homerun.
 
Framingham managed three runs off of four hits late in the sixth inning, bringing the game to within one run. However, Tara Cayton (Fy., Pleasanton, Calif. / Amador Valley) recorded her first collegiate double to give the Scots a base runner. Anna Munson (Fy., LaCrosse, Wis. / Central) helped seal the win for the Scots with an RBI single to bring Cayton home and put Macalester up 6-4.
 
Knopf re-entered the game to earn the save for the Scots after pitching the first two innings of play. She allowed just two hits and pitched three strikeouts in three total innings. She was also 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
 
In the second game vs. Franciscan, Macalester found itself down after giving up three runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. However, the Scots overcame a 4-1 deficit in the third, rallying for an eight-run inning. A four-run fifth-inning ended the game and helped Macalester move to 5-1 on the season.
 
Katie Fuller (So., Boulder, Colo. / Boulder) led the Scots charge in the game hitting a double in the second and a single in the third. She finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Stokes was also 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI, while Nagy and Munson each added a run and an RBI.
 
Knopf earned the win for the Scots, giving up just one hit and striking out three batters in three innings pitched. With the win over Franciscan, Knopf improves to 3-0 on the season with a 1.11 ERA and 21 strikeouts.
 
Stokes, who was 3-for-5 on the day, leads the Scots with a .667 batting average, two homeruns and eight RBIs this season. Nagy, who added her fourth home run of the season, is batting .527 with nine hits and nine RBIs. As a team, the Scots are hitting .362 in their first six non-conference matchups.
 
Macalester takes Tuesday off from competition, but will be back in action Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. vs. Mount Ida and 5:00 p.m. vs. Rutgers-Newark.
