Team Awards announced; Ingram is MVP

The Macalester baseball team awards for 2011 have been announced, and pitcher Alex Ingram (Sr., Chicago, Ill. / Morgan Park Academy) has been named team Most Valuable Player. The Scots recently completed their best season ever, going 26-14 and winning a share of the MIAC crown with a 16-4 league mark.

Ingram posted an 8-1 record on the mound with a 2.49 ERA, striking out 59 and walking just 15 in 68 2/3 innings. He started 10 games and came out of the bullpen four times. Ingram led the MIAC in innings pitched and wins, and was second in strikeouts, ERA and opposing batting average.

Second baseman Mitch Glasser (Jr., Chicago, Ill. / The Latin School) was selected Offensive MVP and shortstop Jimmy Belfont (So., Olney, Md. / Our Lady of Good Counsel) was chosen as Defensive MVP.

A two-time All-MIAC selection, Glasser hit a team-best .408 with four home runs and a .617 slugging percentage. He struck out just once in 129 plate appearances, that coming on the final day of the season at the MIAC tournament. Glasser hit .462 in conference play.

Belfont anchored Macalester standout defensive infield play which led the MIAC in fielding percentage and double plays turned. He started all 20 conference games, hitting .340 with a team-leading 11 walks, and registred a .955 fielding percentage in the MIAC. Belfont was picked to the MIAC All-Defensive team.

Macalester's Co-Most Valuable Pitchers are Ingram and Eric Robinson (Sr., San Francisco, Calif. / The Urban School). They were second and third, respectively, in the MIAC in earned run average. Robinson spent most of the season ranked among the national ERA leaders and finished with an 8-2 record and 2.76 ERA. He fanned 45 batters and allowed just 11 free passes in 65 1/3 innings, and was one of three Scots to make the MIAC All-Defensive team.

Picking up Macalester's Most Improved Player Award is center fielder Will Chen (Sr., Edina, Minn.). One of six Macalester All-MIAC picks, Chen was also named to the All-Defensive squad. Chen batted .366 in MIAC play and did not commit an error in 40 games. He ranked fourth in the league in hits, second in doubles, first in steals and fourth in total bases.

The winner of Macalester's Team Award is catcher Michael Galgay (Fy., Westerlo, N.Y. / Berne-Knox-Westerlo). Macalester's 2012 team captains were announced and are Glasser, Garrett Salzman (Jr., Glendale, Calif. / St. Francis) and Robert Williams (Jr., West Covina, Calif. / Northview).
