Baseball: Macalester Scores 31 Runs in Sweep at Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team handed Carleton College a pair of lopsided defeats, winning 20-2 and 11-1 in a MIAC doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Mel Taube Field. The Scots, who pounded out 26 hits on the day, extend their winning streak to five to improve to 22-10 overall and 11-3 in conference play. The Knights fall to 6-18, 4-8 MIAC.

In the first game, Macalester put a crooked number on the scoreboard in six of the seven innings, including two runs in the top of the first. First year outfielder John McMurray (Washington, D.C./Sidwell Friends) drew a two-out walk, stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on a passed ball. Sophomore outfielder Tristan Lander (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson), who also walked, came home on a single by sophomore Connor Davison (Redwood City, Calif./Woodside) for a 2-0 lead.

Carleton scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first, then the Scots proceeded to score 18 runs over the next six innings. Junior infielder Holden Peacock (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid School), senior outfielder Raymond McCaskey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) and McMurray drove in runs in a three-run second inning, and sophomore catcher Bobby Munoz (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica) singled to score Lander and then came home on a double by senior infielder Josh Planko (Northville, Mich./Northville) for a 7-1 lead in the third. Lander, Munoz and Davison had RBIs without registering a hit in a four-run fourth inning, then Lander hit a sacrifice fly to plate McCaskey in the fifth to make the score 12-1.

In the sixth, senior infielder Nathan Gumagay (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill), Peacock and McMurray drove in single runs in a five-run inning. Macalester wrapped up the scoring spree with three more runs in the top of the seventh, including RBIs from Peacock and senior catcher Stephen Paulsen (Middleton, Wis./Middleton). The Knights scored a run in the bottom of the seventh on a balk to make the final score 20-2.

The Scots drew 15 walks in the game, resulting in 10 of the 20 runs scored. McMurray went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs, while Peacock scored three runs and drove in three. Lander, Munoz and Davison delivered two RBIs apiece. Overshadowed by Macalester's offensive output, junior Jack Nussbaum (Brunswick, Maine/Thornton Academy) limited Carleton to one unearned run on four hits while striking out nine without a walk in five innings to improve to 2-1 on the season. Senior Tristan Collins (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) pitched the final two innings, allowing a run on three hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

In Game 2, Lander gave the Scots an early lead with a sacrifice fly that scored McCaskey in the top of the first inning. The score remained 1-0 until the fourth inning, when Gumagay delivered a two-out double to plate Planko for a 2-0 lead. McCaskey led off the fifth with a solo home run, his team-leading fourth of the season. Lander doubled home McMurray and later scored on a grounder by senior Niko Alexander (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) to make the score 5-0. After Carleton tallied a run in the bottom of the fifth, McMurray drove in Peacock and Lander singled home McCaskey for a 7-1 advantage in the sixth. In the eighth, Lander hit another RBI single to score Peacock, and Alexander hit a two-run single to extend the lead to 10-1. Senior infielder Tristan Jones (Fairfield, Conn./Greens Farms Academy) came home on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth to close out the scoring.

McCaskey went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, three runs and an RBI. Lander capped off a solid day, going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and four RBIs in Game 2, while Munoz and Alexander each had a pair of hits. The Scots' pitching staff turned in another strong performance in holding Carleton to one run on eight hits. Junior Josh Schmidt (Chicago, Ill./Whitney M. Young Magnet) started and gave up a run on four hits while walking two and fanning three in five innings to improve to 2-0. Sophomores Elliott Rowley (South Pasadena, Calif./Polytechnic School) and Haruto Mizuno (Irving, Texas/Ranchview), senior Jamie Loizeaux (Albany, Calif./Albany) and junior Nick Strezo (San Mateo, Calif./Hillsdale) each pitched a scoreless inning of relief, with Rowley and Mizuno striking out two Knights apiece.

The MIAC schedule rolls on with a home doubleheader against Saint John's on Tuesday, April 21. The first game starts at 2:30 p.m. at Nicholson Field.
