MANKATO, Minn. – The Macalester College baseball team lost to regionally-ranked Bethany Lutheran College, 10-3 in a non-conference game Monday afternoon at ISG Stadium. Senior
Raymond McCaskey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) registered the 100th hit of his career in the loss, which gives the Scots a 23-13 record on the season. The Vikings, who have the third-highest NCAA Power Index (NPI) in Region IX, improve to 25-5.
Bethany Lutheran opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the second and added four more in the third for a 6-0 lead. McCaskey led off the top of the fourth with a single for his 100th career hit. He joins seniors
Niko Alexander (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and
Josh Planko (Northville, Mich./Northville) as Scots who have recorded their 100th hit this season. McCaskey advanced to second on a wild pitch, then scored Macalester's first run of the game on a single by first year outfielder
John McMurray (Washington, D.C./Sidwell Friends). In the top of the sixth, Planko hit a sacrifice fly to score senior
Brennan Murley (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) to make the score 6-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Vikings scored a run on a wild pitch, then added to more runs in the bottom of the seventh for a commanding 9-2 advantage. McMurray came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore
Bobby Munoz (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica), but that's as close as the Scots would get. Bethany Lutheran added a run in the bottom of the eighth to close out the win, 10-3.
McCaskey went 2-for-4 with a run in addition to achieving his milestone. Six pitchers appeared in the game for Macalester, with senior
Jamie Loizeaux (Albany, Calif./Albany) pitching a scoreless inning of relief.
The Scots resume MIAC play on Wednesday, April 29 with a home doubleheader against Augsburg. Macalester will honor its seniors as a part of Senior Day before they play their final home games. The first pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. at Nicholson Field.
