MIAC season starts with sweep over Augsburg

Macalester vs. Augsburg box scores: Game 1 | Game 2

Macalester received standout pitching and belted three home runs on the day to begin the MIAC campaign with a doubleheader sweep over Augsburg at Nicholson Field. Macalester pitchers gave up just 12 hits in 17 innings of work.

Alex Ingram (Sr., Chicago, Ill. / Morgan Park Academy) pitched the Scots to a 9-1 victory in the first game, holding the Auggies to six hits with his complete game win, and improving to 3-0 on the season. Mitch Glasser (Jr., Chicago, Ill. / The Latin Academy) and Robert Williams (Jr., West Covina, Calif. / Northview) blasted three-run homers in the third inning to put Macalester up for good.

While Ingram was holding Augsburg to six hits and striking out seven, the Scots received three hits each from Glasser and Garrett Salzman (Jr., Glendale, Calif. / St. Francis), and two more apiece from Williams, Nathan Rubin (Jr., Venice, Fla.) and Will Chen (Sr., Edina, Minn.).

In game two, Nick Meerson (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif./ / Harvard-Westlake) went 6 2/3 innings and Eric Robinson (Sr., San Francisco, Calif. / The Urban School) pitched the final 3 1/3 frames, and Macalester pulled out the win in the 10th inning on a Chen two-out double. This was after Augsburg sent the game to extra frames with a two-run pinch-hit homer while down to their final out in the bottom of the seventh (Mac batted first because the games were Augsburg home games before being moved to St. Paul. Chen also hit his first home run of the year earlier in the game.

Chen and Andrew Gardiner (Fy., Hanover, N.H.) each had two hits on the game.

The Scots go back at it tomorrow with another MIAC twinbill at home against Hamline at 2:30 p.m.
