Macalester wins another 4-3 overtime match; Clinch MIAC playoff berth

Macalester vs. St. John's statistics

Macalester won its second straight 4-3 overtime match, topping St. John's on a cold, wet and windy day in Collegeville on an Erik Johnson (Sr., Bethesda, Md. / Landon) goal, the first of his Mac career.  The Scots are now 13-3-1 overall and at 7-2 in the MIAC, and need to beat Hamline on Friday (Oct. 29) to clinch the conference championship or tie the Pipers to guarantee a share of the crown.

Mac has clinched a position in next week's MIAC playoffs and will play a semi-final game Tuesday (Nov. 2) against a team to be determined after Saturday's matches, and at a site to be determined. Potential semi-final opponents are Concordia, Carleton, Augsburg and Gustavus.  The winner of the MIAC playoffs gets an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III playoffs.  Macalester won last year's conference tourney.

The comeback wasn't as dramatic as Friday's match at St. Thomas when the Scots came back from 3-0 with just 15 minutes left in regulation, but was still impressive. The Johnnies led 3-1 at the intermission before Macalester made its move.

After St. John's led 1-0 at halftime on a Michael Coborn hat trick, Robin Forslund (Fy., Madison, Wis. / Memorial) cut the margin to a single goal by scoring in the 53rd minute on a Murphy-Logue assist.  Forslund tallied the game-winning overtime goal against St. Thomas.  Stephen Murphy-Logue(Sr., Anchorage, Ak. / West) accounted for Mac's first half marker with his eighth score of the year.

Taylor Rasmussen (So., Eagan, Minn. / Eastview), who netted the tying goal in the final minute of regulation to force OT at St. Thomas, scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season in the 63rd minute to deadlock the score at 3-3. With seven scores in conference play, Rasmussen ties Concordia's Riley McGlynn for the MIAC lead and has a chance to become Mac's first MIAC goal-scoring champ since Kimani Williams (16 goals in the league and 22 overall) in 2001.

With just 1:13 left in the second overtime session before the match would have been declared a draw, Johnson beat the SJU goalkeeper following a pass from Murphy-Logue to give Macalester the victory.

Macalester out-shot St. John's 27-18 and 16-7 in attempts on net, and earned a 14-9 corner kick advantage.  Rasmussen delivered five shots on net and Johnson had four.

The Scots, who are 6-1 over their last seven games, go for their 10th MIAC title and first since 2005 when they host Hamline on Senior Night this Friday (Oct. 29) at 7:30 p.m.
