Macalester improves to 5-2-1 on the season and 1-1 in MIAC competition. The Cardinals drop to 4-2-1 overall, 0-2-1 in the MIAC. The Scots are now 12-0-2 vs. SMU over the last 14 meetings between these two teams.
Although the Scots earned an 11-3 margin in shots on goal, they had to work hard on this night. St. Mary's opened the scoring on Amy Sibik's breakaway goal at 7:30, her 10th of the season, and had several good chances to extend the lead. Meanwhile, a hard-attacking Macalester team was kept off the board until a foul in the box at 78:24 gave Coe an opportunity to equalize the match with a drilled PK to the right side.
This gave the Scots new life and Bardwell took advantage of the opportunity late in the first 10-minute overtime session, scoring a nice goal on an assist by
Maddy Cochrane (Sr., Grand Marais, Minn. / Cook County). Bardwell leads the team with five goals.
Macalester out-shot St. Mary's 24-9 and had all four of the game's corner kicks.
Tressa Versteeg (Jr., Pella, Ia.) picked up the win with two saves, while SMU keeper Mariana Sanchez made nine stops. Bardwell accounted for nine of Mac's 24 shots, netting the game-winner on her fifth shot on goal.
The Scots play Saturday (Sept. 26) at Augsburg for a 7 p.m. MIAC match.
